Note that donor Lt. J. W. White's name is mistranscribed on catalog card and ledger book as "J. M. White".As of 2009, there are 6 halibut hooks with this number. Note re photos: Neg. # 2009-4895 is photo of 1 hook only.

FROM CARD: "NO. 1 HAS ELEVEN VALVES OF PECTUR [sic] SHELLS, HOOP OF SPRUCE ROOT NO. 2 HAS 16 VALVES STRUNG ON A SINGLE HOOP WHICH ITS ENDS LAPPED AND FEATHERS PLACED AT THE LAP, THE FEATHER AND LAP WOUND WITH CEDAR BARK. NO 3 HAS 3 HOOPS OF DIA. 2-1/2, 1-7/8 AND 1-3/8. STRUNG WITH SMALL PECTUR [sic] SHELLS."The shells on the rattle are called "Pectur" on the old catalogue card. "Pectur" may be a mistranscription of "Pecten". In support of this, note that James G. Swan in a July 10, 1864 letter in the accession file refers to these rattles as made of scallop shells.

Provenience note: many objects in the Chirouse collection were catalogued as Duwamish, however that really only seems to definitively apply to Catalogue No. 130965. Accession record indicates that the collection is the "handiwork of the Snohomish, Swinomish, Lummi, Muckleshoot and Etakmur Indians on the Tulalip Reservation in Washington Territory".

From card: "Introduced by Makah 70 years ago. [i.e. about 70 years prior to 1917.] Small well made, grass over rush and cedar bark; linear patterns."

From card: "The Quileute Indians learned the make of these baskets some 40 years ago [i.e. about 40 years prior to 1917]. Loop edge; star pattern."
