A BLACK-BRIMMED HAT. TIGHTLY WOVEN, CONICAL RAINPROOF HAT WHICH IS SLIGHTLY CONCAVE AT THE TOP. A HEAD CAP IS WOVEN IN THE INTERIOR FOR A CLOSER FIT. THE EXTERIOR IS PAINTED WITH A BROAD BLACK, AND BLUISH-BLACK BANDS, WITH FORMLINE DESIGNS IN RED AND BLACK AT THE TOP. EXHIBITED MAGNIFICENT VOYAGERS, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, 1985-86. Re the design painted on the hat Ostapkowicz notes that it is a "Two-toned black-brimmed hat. ... The formline design suggests a split, bulbous-headed creature with a fluked tail, perhaps a whale."
