Cantonese Opera costume chest with curved lid and false bottom. False bottom (3 1/8 in. deep) has 1 1/4 in. holes, 8 in. from either end, front and back, for insertion of carrying poles. Curved lid is covered with leather (dark brown) secured by hand wrought iron nails. Iron closures on lid line up with closures on front of chest. Chest is painted red with large, circular, floral motif in centre front, green vertical line of white Chinese characters on either side. Above center floral motif is Arabic numeral "6", (which also appears at upper right hand corner) and above this is printed "Made in" (first line) "and" Kum Lon Chang Co. Chong Yuen Fong Street, Canton". Iron handles mounted vertically and iron rings on either side of numeral "6". The same handles and rings appear on back of chest, under three hinges on lid. Iron handles on each side. Wrought iron braces on corners.

Tie-dyed cloth of turquoise diagonal background with white blossoms. Black ends with turquoise face and white designs with black end.

Black cloth. Both ends cut with pinking shears.

Red and green stripes on beige-grey ground. Brown on reverse side. Ends have been cut with pinking shears. Stamped with Japanese characters on un-numbered end.

Bands of red with white design, alternating with bands of red, blue, green, orange flowers and leaves on beige ground. Fabric is folded and stitched to cardboard at one end. Japanese characters on same side, at each end.

Blue, silk, square brocade cover with blue and green twisted rope around the edges. The centre of the cover depicts two hexagonal boxes with four brown and gold tassel-like structures around them, on a light blue background. The boxes are brown, pink, green, orange, blue and gold.

Six squares of colour with interior design connected by tree motifs of pine and plum. Cord piping, and for knot-work at each corner.

Hanging formed by panels of peony, chrysanthemum and prunus design fabric in blue, orange and metallic thread on black. Brown silk lining.

Rectangular cover with woven design. The design has gold hexagon shapes over the entire dark green cover. Within some of the shapes are gold floral motifs. The back is lined with dark yellow fabric.

Green and blue hanging with embroidery. The large royal blue centre has embroidered ship, shell, wave and other marine motifs in gold, white and green. The blue centre is surrounded by a light green damask border. The other side of the hanging is lined with dark green silk.
