Sake ContainerN2.1329 a-b

Sake container (a) in the shape of a cylinder that tapers towards the bottom with two flaring arms at the top that are joined with a crossbar for a handle. A tapered stopper (b), fits into a hole near the edge of the top. Bands of twisted bamboo, two near the top, and five of differing widths at the bottom, hold the staves of wood together. Stained reddish-brown overall with a Japanese character inside a circle painted on the outside of each arm, and Japanese characters painted around the centre of the base.

Standing figure of Kwannon; figure is a male (a) holding a lotus flower (b) in one had and is depicted in a loose flowing garment. There is a small image of Amida in his crown. Dark finish with traces of gilt. Kwannon was an attendant to Amida Buddhas known as the "goddess of mercy" originally represented as a male. Halo (c).

Standing figure of Hotei depicted with his usual expression of laughter. He is clothed in loose attire revealing his abdomen and carries a fan in one hand. Hotei is a legendary Chinese Zen priest known as Pu T'ai. He is said to have lived in the T'ang times as a vagabond priest with a large bag carried on the end of a stick.

Full suit of armour, including leggings, skirt, tunic and helmet. Bands of lacquer threaded together to form a flexible unit. Parts are padded and embroidered and lined with floral silk brocade. Gold-coloured plates with purple silk cord.
