Cantonese Opera HatN1.808

The folded hat is red and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a red centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are blue peonies with blue-green leaves and yellow swirls. On the inside of both side folds are blue-green peonies with yellow swirls. The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green, blue, white, silver and gold. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large green symbol. Surrounding the symbol is a circle of blue peonies, yellow scroll designs and green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.805

On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. One ecru tie and one cloth tie are attached.

Cream robe with blue trim. The robe has slender sleeves, side slits and a side opening with metal snap closures. The collar is a wide band around the neck and down the side opening. The collar is edged with blue and stiffened with paper and adhesive. The sleeve cuffs are also edged with blue. The inside is lined with white cotton.

Cantonese Opera SkirtN1.723

Pink skirt with embroidery and pleats. Across the top is a wide cotton waistband with two long ties and three frog closures. The skirt has two identical panels, overlapping at centre front. The pink damask is woven containing a flower motif. The centre front pieces have appliqué lotus, tree peony, and prunus motifs. The edges are lined with thin gray trim. The inside is unlined.

Cantonese Opera Transforming RobeN1.718

Reversible transformation robe (fan gongzhuang) with a stand-up collar, wide sleeves, side slits and a centre opening with brass frog fasteners. On surface A, the upper front, back and sleeves have phoenix, bat, cash, narcissus and peony motifs in silver on a red ground. The sleeve border has chrysanthemum motif in silver on a black ground. Below the waist the robe divides into overlapping multicoloured strips with canopy, mountain, cloud, chrysanthemum and narcissus motifs in silver. There are green glass eyes and circular mirrors on the front, back and sleeves. On surface B, the front, back and sleeves have bird, chrysanthemum, leaf, tree and butterfly motifs in many colours on a tourquoise ground. The collar, sleeve and border bands have a chrysanthemum motif in red, pink, purple and yellow on a turquoise ground. There are circular mirrors and tin reflectors.

White robe with wide extended sleeves, side slits and side opening with ties. On the front and back is a square rank panel with peony, mountain and wave motifs in gold, pink, blue and green on black ground. The collar, sleeve, side and hem borders have bat, endless knot and coin motifs in gold, pink and orange on blue ground. There are tin reflectors and white fur on the front, back and sleeves. The belt carriers are red and stiffened with paper, wood and adhesive. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.

The collar band has a peony motif in white, blue and yellow on a red ground. The sleeve and border bands have Buddhist vase and lotus symbols in silver and pink on medium blue ground. There are green glass eyes and tin reflectors on the front, back and sleeves. Belt carriers have multicoloured fish and flower motifs on a deep pink ground stiffened with paper, wood and adhesive. The inside lining is white linen.

Cantonese Opera ArmourN1.682 a

Orange armour robe with slender sleeves, epaulets and a side opening with brass frog fasteners. Below the waist, the armour divides into one front panel and three back panels. On the front are fu dog, butterfly, sun and peony motifs in gold, pink, red, purple, blue and green. The detachable collar band has butterfly and peony motifs in gold, green, purple and blue. The sleeves are have butterfly, bat, peony and swastika motifs in gold, pink, purple, green and blue. The back has butterfly, bat, fish, endless knot and peony motifs. On each of the large back panels there are five tassels in yellow, turquoise, pink, green and orange. On the front are four tassels in turquoise, green, light and dark pink. There are green glass eyes, tin reflectors and white fur on the front and back. There are also circular and hexagonal mirrors. The inside lining is white cotton.

Red robe with long sleeves, side slits and side opening with a tie. On the lower front is a butterfly motif in green, yellow and black on a red ground. The collar and waist border has chrysanthemum and prunus motifs in blue and turquoise on a pink ground. The waist border has a fine blue and white fringe along the lower edge. The sleeve and bottom hem border has a diamond pattern in blue and white. There are tin reflectors on the back and front. The waistband is stiffened with paper and adhesive. The inside lining is natural-coloured cotton.
