Musical Instrument1288/1 a-b

The bamboo instrument (part a) is a plucked idiophone known as mukkuri in Ainu. It is made of a flat long wooden stick which extends into a wider rectangular shape at one end. Within the first piece there are two slits which go along the stick in a prong-like shape; a red string loop is attached. The second piece (part b) is a paper document with orange designs and black and white writing characters with a picture of the object in the bottom middle.

Round-bottomed jar with very low shoulder and tall, wide, flared neck. Neck is decorated with patterns of incised lines; patterns from shoulder up are: two wavy bands; band of vertical lines; band of diagonal lines that go up to the right and; band of rectangles with cross-hatching fill separated by vertical lines. Woven bamboo holder around base.

Vertical rectangular box made of coloured paper laid over a bamboo frame. Box has two red vertical bars across the top--four paper fish silhouettes are laid across the bars, with an additional fish glued to the box in the background, creating a sense of depth. Across the top of the box is a wide strip of red paper printed with gold circular shapes with characters in the centre. Two red paper pennants fly from the top corners of the box.

Light brown-yellow coloured woven basket (part a) with rectangular base, bulbous-shaped centre, two shoulders and twisted bamboo handles narrowing sharply to flared neck. The top rim of the piece is in the form of a circle and has split bamboo strips projecting inwards to form a funnel opening for the lid (part b).

A long flat curved metal knife (part a) engraved with a triangular and semi-circle design with dots, and decorated with a fan-like piece which protrudes near that pointed end. The bottom of the knife tapers down to a long sharp rectangular point. The handle (part b) is a long cyliner with a metal part at the top with a hole through which the knife's long sharp rectangular point inserts.

Flat FanN3.48

Flat fan made of finely-split bamboo flaring out from its attachment point to a long wooden handle painted black. Perimeter of fan is circular except for the lower edge where the handle is attached, which is straight and at right angles to handle. Fan is covered with lacquered paper on both sides, patterned with a design of four triangles radiating from centre. The top triangle is red, the one where the handle attaches is yellow, and the two at the sides are green. The area where the triangles meet is covered with a black circle enclosing an even cross. In each of the quadrants thus formed is a line going in from the edge of the circle parallel to one arm of the cross, then bending at a right angle and curving to follow the outline of the circle. The area surrounding the handle on one side is covered with a grey paper cut, and the area immediately surrounding the handle is painted orange. The fan inserted into a split in the handle, which is shaped like a pointed oval where it covers the fan, which is attached with two rivets.
