Flute3439/3

Long, hollow cylinder of bamboo with two projections on its sealed end. The opposite end is open, has a triangular notch, and is decorated with a crosshatch design. The entire cylinder has been lightly carved and painted with repeating narrow oval shapes, tapering to a point at each end, with repeating triangles within. There are two holes on the side near the closed end. The designs are coloured a light reddish-brown. Interior is undecorated.

Papermaking Container3396/11 a-b

Container (part a) and mixing stick (part b) for stirring paper paste. The container is cylindrical, with one open end, and a concave base. Both the top and bottom sides are partially stripped. The stirring stick is composed of a long cylindrical shaft, with five small wood pegs inserted into the rectangular end - three through one side, and two through the other.

Papermaking Mould3396/10

Papermaking mould with a frame composed of four pieces of bamboo - two long pieces, each with two notches for the shorter pieces to be inserted into, creating a square. Each piece has been marked on the interior with a letter 'A' through 'D'. A mesh screen is strung into the middle with four ties along the long edge, and three along the short. The screen has folded and sewn edges, creating long pockets through which sticks are inserted giving the screen a frame. One stick is only partially inserted, leaving it overhanging from the screen.

Loom3447/1 a-e

Loom with a partially completed weaving tied to four bars (part a). Weaving attached to bars at the top and bottom with one bar, intertwined in the weaving, towards the bottom, and another attached to the back, towards the bottom. There are three removable swords (parts b-d) and one removable shuttle (part e) stored in the weaving, at the bottom. The attached bars are all made of bamboo. The shuttle (part e) and one of the swords (part c) are made of light yellow-brown wood, the other two swords (parts b and d) are dark brown. The shuttle has notched ends and is wrapped entirely in orange thread. The weaving on part a is orange and has rows of repeated designs across the entire surface. Row designs include: loose chevron pattern, tight chevron pattern, dotted squares, dotted lines, "X" design across length with squares in the negative space, and abstract "V" design across length with squares in the negative space. Designs done in indigo, red, yellow, black, green, dark blue, white and electric blue. Rest of weaving is incomplete and orange in colour, with loose strands of black and yellow throughout. Three metal rings attached to the top and bottom loom bars- one on the top, to the right of the weaving, and two on the bottom, on either side of the weaving.

Model Canoe3274/72 a-i

Model inter-island sailing canoe, with single-hull outrigger. Main hull is carved of a single piece of wood with attached forked end pieces at fore and aft. Hull is panted black with areas near top decoratively left unpainted. Several benches span the interior of the vessel. Detailed wood rigging with intricate, twisted cordage attaches main boat to outrigger float. A woven triangular sail is suspended between two posts, with a third attached by cordage, and can be balanced upright above the main hull. A large plant fibre tassel hangs from the top point. Part b is a 'canoe lee platform' meant to hang off the opposite side from the outrigger. Parts c-d are very small removable benches that fit into spaces at the fore and aft of the main hull. Part e is a rudder; parts f-g are leaf-shaped blade model paddles; part h is a model steering paddle; part i is a smaller model paddle with a leaf-shaped blade (its wood matches that of the platform).

Shadow Puppet3338/9 a-c

Sun Wukong (Monkey King) shadow puppet with separate head (part b) and gold staff(?) (part c). Depicted with a human-like body, and monkey head. He wears a long yellow tunic with red tie ending in green tassels around his waist, and red pants. On his feet he wears tiger(?) shoes. His head is yellow with five black spots, except for a mask-like area around his eyes and nose. Limbs jointed with fibre at the shoulders, elbows and hips. Operated by three rods. The staff is yellow, with a thin red outline, and is operated by one rod.
