Tapa Cloth2947/17

Rectangular tapa cloth with geometric designs in black and tan on a medium-brown base. The cloth is divided by thick black lines into a 6x6 grid. The first, third and fifth rows alternate between a brown and black floral design against a tan background and a square decorated with an abstract triangle-based pattern. The second, fourth and sixth rows alternate between a star-like pattern and a brown square horizontally bisected by a black line. The cloth has an un-pigmented border with irregular edges.

Tapa Cloth2947/16

Rectangular tapa cloth with geometric designs in black, dark brown and light brown against a medium-brown base. The tapa cloth is divided by dark brown lines into six columns. The design featured in the first, third, fourth and sixth columns depicts a diamond nestled between two X-shapes. Above and below the diamond design are dark brown and black triangles. The second and fifth columns are loosely based on a diagonal cross plan.

Tapa Cloth2947/15

Rectangular tapa cloth with geometric designs in black, dark-brown and tan against a medium-brown base. The tapa cloth is divided by patterned lines into three rows. The top and bottom row feature abstracted floral-like designs with two brown and two black leaves. The middle row contains eight point stars outlined in dark brown. Four diamond-like shapes radiate out from the dark brown circle at each star’s centre. The medium-brown space around each of the stars and floral designs is decorated with a tan triangular pattern.

Container2960/41 a-b

Container made of a gourd, rounded and oblong with a relatively wide, round foot. The gourd is covered with basketry, which is itself covered in a thick dark substance. The wooden lid (part b) is carved into 4 creatures, the top being a man with a long head and face, topped by a cylindrical hat. He sits on a horse with a stylized human face. The horse balances on a smaller two legged creature, also with a human-like face, who in turn balances on an even smaller creature with a human-like face, smiling. Beneath the four is the small, round lid and stopper that fits into the mouth of the container. The lid is partly covered by a shiny substance.

Mask2960/19

Carved wooden portrait mask. The face is flat and broad, with a small rounded mouth above a prominent pointed beard, with vertical line decoration and two holes in the tip. The nose is small, with two large closed eyes to either side with wide slits for viewing holes. Brows are incised and rounded. Hair is indicated at the top of the mask by a checkered pattern carved into the wood. A series of small, regularly sized holes puncture the bottom portion of face at the edge. A support of crossed bark strips creates a stiff grid at the back of the mask, to which pieces of a canvas-like material are attached to cover the wearers head. Feathers are sewn to the fabric on the right side.

Rectangular medium-brown tapa cloth with geometric patterns in light brown. Decorated with alternating four-point stars and pinwheels. One half of the tapa cloth is significantly more faded. Three sides have a broad un-pigmented border with irregular edges.

The edges of the cloth are un-pigmented, and somewhat ragged. There is a border along both top and bottom with swag shapes in light brown.

Each of the squares contains a diagonal cross and two diamond and two triangular shapes. Two sides of each square are bordered with a line of triangles. The two remaining sides are decorated with a series of revolving hour-glass shapes.

Rectangular tapa cloth with geometric patterns in dark brown and yellow on a tan base. Dark brown pinwheels are bordered by diamond patterns. These sequences alternate between two yellow diamonds and a black diamond with the black shapes falling at the corners of the pinwheels. Shapes are separated from one another by dark brown lines, giving the cloth a grid-like appearance. One edge is decorated with a series of dark brown hour glass shapes.

Large rectangular tapa cloth with black light brown geometric designs against brown background. The designs are organized in a three-by-four grid. Each of the grid’s rectangles contains, at centre, a black four-point star and, in the corners, two black spades-like and two black clubs-like designs oriented diagonally away from the centre. Each rectangle is bordered by dark brown lines and the entire tapa cloth has a black border. The brown base areas are decorated with light brown linear patterns. One edge is un-pigmented with irregular, somewhat ragged edges.
