A rattle made of four tubular seed pods (parts b-e), each about 31 cm. Long with a 2 cm. diameter, dark brown and loosely bound together with coarse plant fibre cord ( part a). The tubes have seeds inside. The end of one tube (part b) is plugged with plant fibre like the cord, the end of the next tube (part c) is plugged with white plant pulp while the end of another tube (part d) is plugged with soft brown paper (?), and the end of the last tube (part e) is plugged with paper(?) at one end and plant fibre or bark at the other.
Short, cylindrical basket (a) with lid (b). Rim is twined; cedar bark flange looped with cedar bark warp strands. Sides are grass wrapped twining. Cedar bark and grass base, plain twined with checker work centre. Design has geometric motif around middle of basket in purple-blue, yellow and purple. Seven concentric bands at bottom in purple, yellow, and red-purple. The lid is wrapped twined grass with geometric design of sunburst circle at centre in dark purple, green, orange and purple. Geometric motif between centre design and edge, in blue, purple, yellow, and red-purple. Rim has seven concentric bands of blue, purple, yellow, red-purple, and purple-blue.
Part (a) Coiled, round basket (with bifurcated stitiches) with fitted lid (b). Watch-spring construction. Fully imbricated with light yellow-brown grass. Design of rows of large arrows in black and red cherry bark. Lid is watch-spring coiled with small hide loop handle. Completely imbricated with grass and design of five rows of dark and red cherry bark.
Mask with top knot of folded cedar bark wrapped with a strip of red plastic near the base. The mask is painted grey and has two indented diagonal curved shapes near the top of the forehead. Curvilinear eyebrow ridges extend beyond the side edges, and beaten copper is nailed to the surface of each. The eyes have circular hollow protruding pupils made of abalone shell, and the hooked beak-like nose has wide rounded nostrils. The open red mouth has pointed recurved lips. The mask also has a pointed chin and a series of black curved lines that accent the cheeks from chin to temple. Signed by artist on reverse.
A very flat brown wooden dish with an elongated oval shape that has one end pointed, and a smooth surface. The rounded end is thicker, and rougher, and is more bent so that it is higher. The convex side is incised with two parallel rows of dots 11 cm. from the pointed end of the bowl. Between the dots and the point, there is a simple incised pattern of parallel and perpendicular lines. A hole is bored through the near point, through which, there is a loop of bark.
An arrow shaft, 83 cm. long, made of a variety of pitpit (sword grass). The shaft is light brown with black coating. The fore-shaft is a flat length of black palm wood, 10.5 cm. long, bound to the shaft with a sleeve of woven rattan 1.5 cm. wide and to the point with a band of bark cord 11 cm. wide. The fore-shaft is also bound with a band of woven rattan less than 1 cm. wide. The bark cord band is coated with red ochre and has a rough stripe of grey clay on each side. The long point is of solid bone, 17 cm. long, also coated with a black substance.
Conical hat (no liner) with knob at crown; wrapped twine cedar warp over 3-corner grass horizontal weft; inner weft of swamp grass. Purple-black dyed cedar decoration with three rows of checkerboard at bottom (rows 3-5). On main brim of hat are two horizontal bands with a whaler, holding a harpoon, standing in a canoe with a whale to the right. Above each canoe is a line with three diagonal spurs along top of line and at widest point of knob are three checkerboard rows. Twining varies in element size with wider elements in four rows around centre, at brim, below meander and on knob. Inside is cedar slat head band with evenly spaced, wide, vertical grass supports worked into the basketry at top of band and ending in two rows of twine at bottom.
An arrow shaft, 88 cm. long, made of a variety of pitpit (sword grass). Light brown near the fore-shaft is darkening to black at the butt due to a black coating. The fore-shaft of black palm wood, 18 cm. long, is inserted into the shaft and bound with a woven sleeve of rattan 1.5 cm. wide. The fore-shaft is incised with dots and zigzag lines. The long point is made of solid bone, protruding 6.5 cm. beyond the fore-shaft and bound to it with a band of bark cord 10 cm. wide and a sleeve of woven rattan 1.5 cm. wide coated with red and yellow ? ochre.
Mask made from cut out planks of wood formed in a triangular-shape with flat sides, a thin adjoining nose piece and rectangular shaped pieces of wood at the back. Detailed in blue, black and red stylized forms is a lightning serpent with a carved snout which is painted black along with the eyebrow and mouth. The large red eyes are outlined in blue. The mouth has red teeth bared. Attached to the top of the mask are long, thin strips of cedar that hang down to cover the head of the wearer. Incised in the inner side is: ‘Clayoquot serpent headdress, J. David, 80’.
Deeply carved humanoid mask has black stained cedar bark strips folded, wrapped and tied to u-shaped ear projections and to upper edge of brow ridge; beneath cedar bark, between ear projections, red scallop-like design; ears have a series of rounded forms with a triangular form at base; large arched brows; deeply inset blue eye areas with black and white circular hollow eyes; hooked nose has curled tip resting on upper lip; rounded flaring hollow nostrils; deeply inset blue area around open mouth with protruding red lip bands; curvilinear t shaped design on cheeks; black and red coil at side rims meld with black chin. On reverse, thin wire is wrapped around a screw at each side rim and a nail at centre top to form a hanging device; red and black paint around eyes, nose and mouth; signed at side on right 'cockle hunter (Bookwus)' Glenn Tallio Nuxhalk Nation Bella Coola B.C.'87.
