The item search helps you look through the thousands of items on the RRN and find exactly what you’re after. We’ve split the search into two parts, Results, and Search Filters. You’re in the results section right now. You can still perform “Quick searches” from the menu bar, but if you’re new to the RRN, click the Search tab above and use the exploratory search.

FROM THE LAND OF THE TOTEM POLES. JONAITIS, ALDONA, 1988
Nose ornament made from shell carved to form two rounded, hook-like shapes that curve towards each other at the centre. Both parts are tied together at one end with a bark-like cord, covered with a black adhesive substance.
Stone adze with wooden handle. Long, smooth, wooden curved handle with perpendicular head. The stone bit is attached to the wooden head by strips of bark that wrap around both. The stone has a rectangular shape with an angled edge at the tip and is mostly smooth. Separate pieces of wood are lodged between the bark strips and the stone.
Container made of a gourd, rounded and oblong with a relatively wide, round foot. The gourd is covered with basketry, which is itself covered in a thick dark substance. The wooden lid (part b) is carved into 4 creatures, the top being a man with a long head and face, topped by a cylindrical hat. He sits on a horse with a stylized human face. The horse balances on a smaller two legged creature, also with a human-like face, who in turn balances on an even smaller creature with a human-like face, smiling. Beneath the four is the small, round lid and stopper that fits into the mouth of the container. The lid is partly covered by a shiny substance.
Carved wooden portrait mask. The face is flat and broad, with a small rounded mouth above a prominent pointed beard, with vertical line decoration and two holes in the tip. The nose is small, with two large closed eyes to either side with wide slits for viewing holes. Brows are incised and rounded. Hair is indicated at the top of the mask by a checkered pattern carved into the wood. A series of small, regularly sized holes puncture the bottom portion of face at the edge. A support of crossed bark strips creates a stiff grid at the back of the mask, to which pieces of a canvas-like material are attached to cover the wearers head. Feathers are sewn to the fabric on the right side.
