Basketry TrayA2374

Rectangular basketry tray of simple coiled work with unsplit stitches on the base and bifurcated stitches on the sides. Coiled handles, splint rim, and partial beading and imbrication. Two cross shapes in red flank a tri-colour diamond shaped with random beading in the centre. Sides of the basket are beaded in red near the rim and feature a series of three staggered red stitches (one in grass and one in red cherry bark, and then again in grass). Some are beaded and some are imbricated.

Bowl-shaped coiled basket (with bifurcated stitches), and watch-spring base construction. Imbricated design is a beaded rim, "y" shapes with thick stems in cherry bark and white cat-tail grass (?) sit on a red horizontal border. Vertical rows of cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?) are below red horizontal border, and lower border of beaded cat-tail grass (?) is at bottom.

Wood paddle that is heavily shellacked. Blade is deeply carved in relief and painted with yellow, red, black, and green in the design of a frog ? on both sides. Has black ovoid in yellow tapering oval eyes, red nostrils, an open mouth with a red tongue and yellow teeth, hunched legs, green sides, and a different creature at either side. Double handle grip.

Brown basket with simple coiled work, bifurcated stitches, and parallel slat base construction. Cross-stitched on the rim. There are two coiled work handles on the ends, which are partially beaded. Decorated with two horizontal rows of beading per slat. Vertically staggered stitches in red cherry bark/white grass/red cherry bark. Three motifs per side, one per end. The rim is beaded in red.
