Bentwood Box2779/2

Very small bentwood box painted in red and black. Design on wide sides shows black eyes encircled in red with two scallops of black crosshatching below; both are similar however one has a long band of crosshatching above, while the other is divided into two. On one narrow side are two heads, on the other an eye with red parts below. At the top of both narrow sides are two round holes, possibly once used for handles?

Bentwood Box2779/1 a-b

Bentwood cedar box (a) with lid (b) has painted sides nailed to base and nails along seam corner. Each side has a design of staggered black eyes, some with red and white details, and a thick greenish blue border. The undecorated lid is made of two pieces of planked wood and has 4 strips of wood nailed to the underside.

Basket2695/13 a-b

Rectangular basket (part a) with lid (part b). The basket a rectangular base, slightly flared sides and rounded handles on each end. The handles are secured to the inside with leather skin ties. Simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with a slat foot and overcast splint rim. The basket has a continuous imbricated design of two bands zigzagging in cat-tail, red and black cherry bark. The lid has a imbricated diamond design with two bands.

Portrait mask. Red, blue and black facial features and tattoo are painted onto the natural wood background. Abalone shell discs and a thin band are glued to the eyes and mouth and a thick coil of red bark rope is attached along the chin line. Long twists of dark hair and tied bundles of painted red bark strips with blue ends drape across the forehead and down the sides.

A short, cylindrical woven basket (a) with lid (b). Base with large central plaited area; plain twined weaving over wide warp strands; sides and lid are twisted, twined work. Upper and lower bands of black, orange, black, plain, black. Central ribbon of yellow wide slanted diagonals on red ground, bordered by yellow and red stripes. Shoulder has thin stripes of blue and purple. Lid has central black sunburst with a ribbon of yellow wide slanted diagonals on orange ground, and thin stripes of black and orange.
