Burden BasketA1491

Rectangular flared, coiled basket (bifurcated stitches) and parallel slat base construction. Upper half of basket is fully imbricated with the design in black bark of mirror image geometric scroll shapes on each side. Bottom half of basket has imbricated "flying goose" design, alternating in rows of red and black bark with grass in between.

Arrow with a double-barbed copper point that has two other barbs that point outwards perpendicular to the shaft of the arrow tip at the base of the arrow head shaft. Plain cedar shaft with remains of feathers bound to shaft near butt end with thin dark brown fibre.

Arrow shaft composed of a long piece of cedar that has a slightly flared notched end, a charred (?) spiral design on the shaft, and the end where the arrow tip would be is wrapped in off-white fibre with charcoal pigment (?) covering most of the fibre. Point is missing.

Cape consisting of long shreds of alternating red and yellow cedar bark folded over at the top and fixed with a row of twine. Additional row of twining halfway down the length. The top has a band of deteriorated grey wool. Numerous eagle ? feathers tied on at intervals.

Very long shreds of golden coloured cedar bark. Twined with a series of evenly spaced horizontal rows for about half the length of the robe (using thin strips of stiffer bark). Fringe hangs loose below. Top edge folded over and secured. Series of twisted bark ties attached on top half.

Basket (part a) of simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base and lid (part b) construction. Decorated with partial beading. Each slat row has two rows of staggered beading that alternate in black and red with every slat row. The lid (part b) has every other slat beaded as well as the rim beaded in red. Cross stitches on the rim of the lid.
