Modified Shell45SJ280/1996-121/98

Three horse clam shells, each with a hole in the center. Original bag has note "In association with feature #3." Field notes from 7/25/68 by T. Bodine and G. Sturdevan describe feature 3 as a hearth uncovered east of the orginal pit, after the original pit was extended. On 7/24/68 a possible burial was uncovered in the NE 1/4 of the E 1/2 of the pit, which extended into east sidewall. To identify whether the remains were human, the pit was extended by one meter, with a 20 cm. balk between. The extension was designated as 0N 15W (A), and the balk was designated 0N 15W (B). Based on a diagram in Bodine's notes showing the relative vertical positions of features, feature 3, and therefore the three shells, appears to be in the upper portion of the 70-90 cm. level, while feature 4, the burial, is depicted in the lower half of the 90-110cm. level. In discussion with Megon Noble, it was decided that the shells are associated with the hearth, not the burial. Claire Wilbert 08/05/2009
