Low-fired pottery with painted accents depicting Adam and Eve and the devil. Adam, on the left side of the object, is the tallest figure represented. He has a large head and a wide neck. His hair, which hangs down his back, and his pupils are painted red-brown. His mouth is agape and he holds his hands upwards as if in shock. His fingers, nipples and a loin cloth around his waist are painted red-brown. Eve is on the right side of the object; she has a wide head and neck. Her hair, pupils, and skirt are painted red-brown. She does not wear a shirt and her belly button is visible. In her left hand she holds an apple up to her mouth; the apple is painted red-brown. The devil is between the two figures. He has horns atop his head and a hunched back and is sitting in the top of an apple tree with many pieces of fruit. The devil and the tree are primarily painted red-brown. The figures stand on top of a rounded mound. The bottom of the object is slightly indented.

Figure2903/43

Low-fired pottery depicting the murder of Pizarro, a Spanish Conquistador. His murderer, on the left side of the object, wears a flat-brimmed hat with feather on the back side. The details of the hat are painted red-brown. His eyebrows are angled downward giving him an angry countenance. He has a red-brown mustache. The murderer wears a cape to the floor; it has a raised portion on the left side. He holds a blade in his left hand which is on the front side of the object. This arm has a very large bicep and red-brown detailing. The murderer’s right arm rests on a stool between his body and that of Pizarro. His right arm has incised detailing suggesting that he wears a puffed sleeve. Pizarro is in a seated position with his upper body leaning far back. His legs are closest to the body of his murderer and are angled outwards around the stool. He wears red brown boots and short pants with incised detailing. His jacket, which also has incised detailing, is open. There is red brown blood on his chest. Pizarro’s arms are spread outwards. There are epaulets on his shoulders. His arm at the back of the object has lost its hand. The hand grasps a weapon with two prongs on either side. Pizarro has a full beard that is shown with incised detailing and red brown paint. His cap has pointed details on top and on the front of it. It also has ear flaps. The chair that Pizarro sits on is very low to the ground; it does not have legs. The two men are standing on a thin rectangular base with a bevelled edge.

Angel Figure2903/39 a-b

Figure of a black angel with a brown wooden base (part b). The figure has a black head and hands formed out of clay. The head of the figure is hair formed from many green cone-like shapes. There are small gold-coloured beads embedded in the cone-like shapes. The figure has white eyes with brown irises; its lips are red. The head is hollow to accommodate the base. The angel does not have a neck; instead, its head is attached to a knitted t-shaped dress, from which the angel’s arms are extended outwards. The dress has wool fibres intermingled with plant fibres. There are various small objects affixed to the dress. There are four bottle caps placed across the angel’s chest and arms. The bottle cap on the furthest left has a small image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts an angel appearing to a group of people with a European-style cathedral in the background. The image in the bottle cap to the right depicts a young shepherd holding a staff and surrounded by sheep. Right of this bottle cap, another image in a bottle cap depicts an older shepherd with a halo. The bottle cap on the furthest right has an image in it depicting an angel in a pink dress feeding birds. Below the bottle caps, on the left side of the angel’s torso, there is a small clothes pin that is painted blue. The clip holds a rectangular piece of paper with an image of a man printed on it; he is depicted from the torso up. The man has black hair and a black mustache. The man wears a blue suit jacket, blue vest and blue tie over a white dress shirt; he also has a white pocket square. Right of the image of the man is a miniature clear plastic bottle with a blue liquid inside. The bottle is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Next to the bottle, there is a small bronze-coloured cross attached to the dress. Right of the cross, a miniature white and blue ceramic spoon is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Below the picture of the man, there is a miniature white and blue cup tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Right of the cup, there is another bottle cap that has an image embedded within it. The image depicts Madonna holding baby Jesus. Both figures wear elaborate crowns and are surrounded by a yellow halo. Next to the bottle cap, there is a small clothes pin painted red. On the right side of the dress, there is a gold-coloured coin with an image of a domed building on one side and an image of Jesus Christ on the other. It is tied to the dress with green ribbon. Below the cup, there is a small plastic figure of a baby tied to the dress with a green ribbon. It has brown hair, black eyes and red lips. Right of the baby, there is a bottle cap with an image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts Jesus Christ holding a lamb. Below this bottle cap, there is a bronze-coloured flower with a stem and two leaves. Next to the flower, in the lower right corner of the dress, there is a bottle cap with an image of Jesus Christ sitting and praying embedded in it. The angel’s wings are made of two pieces of silver metal. They are knitted into the back of the dress. The base is formed by a thin cylindrical piece of wood that is held in a square wooden base.

Low-fired ceramic depicting Joseph and Mary’s flight to Egypt with baby Jesus. Mary is facing front, while Joseph stands with his back to the viewer on the left. He is petting the donkey on which his wife and child sit. Joseph wears a toque-like hat. Details on the hat and his eyes, mustache and beard are painted dark brown. In his right hand, Joseph holds a piece of dark brown fruit. His other hand touches the nose of the donkey. The neckline and arm bands of his shirt are painted dark brown. There is a harness around the donkey’s head. The animal has brown eyes and brown detailing on its body. Mary sits on the donkey’s back holding her baby. They are sitting on a saddle which is affixed to the donkey by a strap underneath its tail. She wears an elaborate hat on her head. The hat has lost a piece on top of it as indicated by two points of breakage; it may have been a handle. She has a jug strapped to her back. The back of her shirt and the neckline are painted brown. She wears a skirt to her calves. Her shoes are dark brown. The baby wears a hat similar to his father’s. The details on his shirt are painted dark brown. All of the figures are attached to a thin, oblong base.

Retablo Altar2903/16

Small portable altar containing a figure of Saint Anthony holding baby Jesus. The altar itself is a small box painted blue on the left and right sides and the floor of the altar. On the right side of the altar, the wall is affixed using two pieces of leather each with four nails in them. At the front of the altar, there is an arched opening revealing the two figures inside. Above the arch, the front wall extends into a triangular roofline. It is painted yellow with dark green, dark blue and brown detailing. On either side the doorway is flanked by flat columns that are topped by triangles. Thus the roofline has three peaks. The columns are painted yellow-white with red, pink, dark green and dark blue detailing. The interior walls of the altar are also painted yellow-white. Saint Anthony is standing upon a ceramic plinth that is painted white, blue and red. The plinth resembles a mushroom in shape. The figures of Saint Anthony and baby Jesus appear to be made out of plastic. In addition to the plinth, Saint Anthony stands upon a small piece of blue ground. He wears brown sandals and a brown robe. He has short, light brown hair and rosy cheeks. Baby Jesus is swathed in a white blanket that has a cluster of brown spots near the upper right side. Baby Jesus has black eyes, rosy cheeks and red lips. On the top side of the object, near the back, there is a metal eye hook for hanging the object. The back of the object is yellow white and has the artist’s name written on it in blue pen. There is also a number written in red pen.

Retablo Altar2903/10 a-c

Small altar containing a three dimensional depiction of a Saint (Saint Thomas?) sitting in a chair. The exterior of the box is painted light grey. The doors each have two pieces of wire attaching them to the altar. There is a metal latch attached to the left door which fits into a metal ring on the right door. On the interior of each door, there is a flower within an oval yellow border. The flower is light grey with brown detailing and a curved green stem. Above the doors, there is a piece of wood angled at both sides created open mitered corners at the top of the façade. It is painted black along the front edge, grey on top and blue on the underside and sides. The edges of the side walls of the altar are painted red where they border the opening of the altar. The opening is also bordered by an inset piece of wood that is cut into an arch. It is decorated with pieces of clay moulded into abstract shapes; they are painted black and green. There are also red and white painted circles decorating the archway. Around the arch, there is a piece of clay moulded to form a scalloped edge; it is painted black. There is a figure of a man sitting inside the altar. His chair is green. The man has brown hair and pink skin. His body is painted with a brown robe and he wears a light grey robe made of fibre over top. There is a metal hat wide-brimmed hat loose within the altar; its provenience is unknown. There is a number written in red pen and pencil on the back of the object. The bottom of the object is unpainted.

Retablo Altar2903/18

Secular portable altar containing three dimensional figures representing a hat shop. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white. On the sides and tops of the object, there are pink, purple, yellow and orange spirals painted over top the background. On the front of each of the two doors of the object, there is a painted flower. The flowers are painted red with purple and yellow accents and green leaves. Over the doors there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the top of the altar that creates a peaked roofline on the façade. It is painted yellow with orange circles decorating it. The insides of the doors have red, purple and grey flowers painted on them. There is also a yellow flower with long stamen painted in the corners on each of the doors. The interior walls of the altar are painted green with purple borders. Twenty three white wide-brimmed hats with black bands around them are hung on the walls. In the lower left corner of the image, a man in a yellow cap, purple coat and purple pants sits upon a red stool. There is a red bowl resting on the ground in front of him. Right of the man, there is a man standing upon a brick-like object. He wears a red jacket, yellow shirt and blue pants. In front of the man, there are four hats resting on the ground around him. The hats are in various stages of being formed. In the lower right corner, there is a man in a green jacket and purple pants sitting upon a red stool. In his left hand, he holds a piece of thread. In front of him, there is an orange hat stand with four hats on it. There is also a grey mortar and pestle. On the back of the object, the artist’s name, a date and a location written in red paint. Also, a year is written in black pen and a number is written in pencil.

Retablo Altar2903/11

Shallow portable altar with two tiers inside. The outside of the altar is painted light grey with various flower motifs over top. On the exterior of the left door, there is a blue and purple flower. The flower on the right door is painted dark grey and red. Above the doors, on the façade of the altar, there is a piece of wood that creates a gently rounded roofline; it is painted red. The interior of the doors have flowers painted on them. The top tier within the altar has small clay figures depicting the four evangelists who are lined against the back wall of the altar. On the left, an evangelist holds a small animal (lamb?) in his right arm and a staff in his left arm. He has long black hair, a halo and wears a red robe. Next to him, another evangelist holds a book and a staff and wears a brown robe and a red cape. To his right, a haloed evangelist holds a staff with a cross at its top. He also holds a lamb. The evangelist on the furthest right holds a pen in one hand and a book in the other. Between the evangelists’ heads, there are small clay objects attached to the back wall of the altar, which look like a bird’s-eye-view of wide-brimmed hats. In front of the evangelist on the furthest left there is a woman who wears a red head scarf, peaked cap and brown skirt, holding an unknown object. There is a child to the right who wears a grey shirt, red suspenders and red pants, also with an unknown object. Right of the child, there is an animal (bull?) resting on all fours; it has horns and red and black fur. Next to this animal, there is another animal with horns, possibly a goat. There is a dark grey squirrel next to the goat. In front of the child, there is a very small horse wearing a saddle and bridle. There is a small dog (?) that appears to be sniffing the horse. Next to the dog, there is a tall animal with curved horns, possibly a ram. A brown llama (?) sits on all fours right of the ram. A yellow and red bird with black stripes stands on the ground right of the llama. A yellow and black striped animal that has lost its head is right of the bird. On the furthest right in the foreground of the top tier, there is a black and red bird that stands with its beak pointing upwards. The tier below depicts Earth. On the ceiling of this tier, there is a dark blue bird flying over the Earth. In the background on the left side of the altar, there is a man in a red shirt and yellow hat holding a small bundle of grain. Next to him, a man holds a large bundle of grain or sticks. To his right, there is a man in a pointed cap, red shirt and black pants. He holds a jug over his left shoulder. The man to the right wears a spotted hat and holds a book open in his right hand. There are three women right of the man who holds the book. They hold various small utensils. In front of the man on the furthest left, a man rides a horse and holds a stringed instrument (guitar?). A woman in a red head scarf kneads dough to the right of the horse. A man in a red cap and red shirt approaches this woman from the right. There is a spotted animal with red spots and horns (bull?) next to the man in the red cap. There is a man crouched in front of the back legs of the spotted animal; he appears to be milking it. Right of the spotted animal, a man pets a four legged animal. In front of the man on the horse, there is a small grey rabbit. Next to the rabbit, there are small balls of dough clustered together on the ground. There is a small four-legged animal looking at the dough on the ground. There is a rooster right of the small animal. Next to the rooster, there is a yellow and red duck that has lost its head. A blue spotted animal sits on its hind legs next to the duck. There is a small grey dish on the furthest left in the foreground. Throughout the background of the altar, there are small red and grey spots. Two numbers are written in pencil on the back of the object.

Pot2847/12

Round pot with a large mouth and a bulbous body with a rounded bottom. The body of the pot is decorated with pigmented patterns of lines, straight and curved, and blocks of colour in orange. On two opposite sides at the rim are two slightly protruding half circles decorated with lines and dots. The interior of the bowl is smooth and undecorated.

Pot2847/10

Small ceramic pot composed of 2 distinct cups attached at the body by a short rounded neck. Each cup has a bulbous body with a rounded base and a slightly flaring rim with a thick lip. A portion of the lip and rim of one of the pots has been chipped away. Parts of the exterior of the pot are covered with an orange glaze.
