Day of the Dead Figure2738/171 a-b

Ceramic toy used to celebrate the Day of the Dead. A light yellow horse (a), with details of eyes, mane, tail and stripes painted in brown, stands on a hollow mustard yellow pedestal with supporting post beneath its belly. On a post in its back is mounted a skeleton (b) made of painted yellow and brown clay with bendable coiled-metal neck, arms and legs.

Owl Figure2731/19

Roughly formed, hand coiled red clay pottery owl salt shaker with four holes in head and a large hole in base. Details are crudely hand painted in brown and red on a buff slipped background, the base is unpainted. Feather pattern covers most of body, dissimilar wings and tail are striped on one side. Circular ears and eyes with multi-lashed ring protrude slightly from head top. Two-tone open beak.

Small portable "retablo" box painted white with purple, green, pink and yellow floral design. Doors at front open on leather hinges to the sides from the centre to display a scene in three dimensions of a mermaid sitting on the rocks playing a guitar for three figures, goat, and a white dove hovering above her head.

Retablo Altar2738/200

Brightly painted, large, portable "retablo" box altar. Two doors on leather hinges and painted on both sides in red, yellow,and black, open with red and white striped ribbons, from the centre outwards, to show two levels of small painted plaster figures and animals arranged into two scenes. On the top is a Nativity scene with the Three Kings and numerous shepherds while, on the bottom, is a scene of celebration with male and female musicians, acrobats, dancers, animals and food on a table. The exterior of the box is painted with red square and dot filled diamond shapes against a white background.

Mermaid Figure2738/175

Burnished Oaxacan black pottery mermaid, with long curled hair and playing a guitar, is perched on circular pottery foot. Her large, flattened tail curves high up her right side and is covered with impressed scale and fin motifs. There is a small hole at her left hip and another hole in the base that lead into the hollow belly.

Retablo Altar2738/196

Brightly painted portable "retablo" box altar. Two doors open outwards from the centre on leather hinges to show a Nativity scene with Jesus as a toddler. Framed behind gilded pillars are small painted plaster figures and animals which are staggered in rows rising in height towards the larger figures of Joseph and Mary. The exterior of the box and the interior of the doors are painted with floral motifs in red, green, blue, purple, yellow, and black on a white background.

Owl Figure2731/17

Roughly formed hand coiled gray clay pottery owl standing on two feet. Details are thickly hand painted in brown over a beige slipped background. Lower body and entire head are unpainted, the feather pattern with centre dots beginning at belly level and extending to the head. Vertical wings protrude slightly, as do the ears and remnants of a beak. Eyes are a simple dot. Mouth is open and there is a large hole under the tail.
