JugM1.38

Jug made of cream, fairly fine-grained clay with a cream slip. Grey-brown, thin, matt paint. Pyriform body, short neck, beaked mouth, small vertical handle from neck to shoulder. Decoration consists of three vertical bands dividing neck into two zones. Three groups of horizontal lines in each zone. Body is divided into two halves by a horizontal wavy line framed by two straight bands. In the upper half are wide, latticed vertical panels framed on each side by a plain vertical band. In the lower half of the body are four groups of four parallel vertical lines converging in the centre on the bottom.

Yellowish buff, fine-grained, hard-fired clay jug, with a white slip. Light brown, semi-lustrous paint. Pyriform body, flat base, short neck, tall-beaked mouth, handle consisting of two twisted strands, extends from neck to body. Three-pierced lugs for suspension on body, one at point where neck meets body, two at base of mouth. Decoration consists of horizontal bands on neck and handle, and two horizontal lines dividing the body into two zones. In the upper zone are vertical triangular crosshatched areas separated by a double zigzag line. In lower zone, groups of two wavy lines converge at mid-point on bottom of base. Circles with dot in centre found between the wavy lines.

Figure representing a votary composed of grey-brown, fairly fine-grained clay with white limestone particles and fine silver mica covered in white slip and the details of the face painted in reddish-orange, and there is reddish-orange also painted on the arms and torso. The figure has a tubular body with its hands raised in front of its chest holding tympanum. Small fringe of hair on forehead. Tympanum and arms made separately and applied.

Jar made of grey-white, coarse-grained clay. Blue-green thick, glaze covers entire surface. Flat base, cylindrical shaped body, turns inwards only slightly leaving a wide-mouthed vessel with a flat rim, separated from the body only by a shallow groove. Near the top of wall are two small pierced lugs. A vertical band in relief decorated with three grooves is situated under each lug. Surface badly worn and gouged.

Ceramic bottle made of light orange, fine-grained clay with a few scattered particles of white limestone and a large quantity of very fine silver mica. Hard-fired. Dark red-brown, mottled to grey-black slip, thin and matt. Flat, slightly raised base, oval shaped body, plain everted rim. Short, upward-pointing spout placed on shoulder. Graceful vertical strap handle, oval in cross-section, attached to rim and shoulder; rises well above the rim.

Amphora, made of cream, grainy clay, full of dark grits. Red-brown and black, thin, matt paint. Small conical foot at bottom and cylindrical between base and body, oval body with flat everted rim and flat vertical handles from rim to shoulder. Decoration consists of short strokes in groups on top surface of rim and handles. Edges of rim and handles outlined with a continuous line. Wavy line on neck. Band at junction of neck and body. Broad and narrow bands in black paint in central portion of body, surrounding one broad red-brown band. Black base.

Apulian black-figure style cup (kantharos) made of light brown, grainy clay. Hard-fired with thin black matt paint. Ring foot, rounded body below carination, which occurs approximately at mid-point, straight-walled above; flat everted rim. Two flat strap handles attached at rim and carination; rises above rim. Decoration consists of bands of paint on foot and rim; on one side a scene of combat with two warriors wearing knee-length tunics; behind them, two trident-like objects; cursory, stylized rendering. On the other side, two roosters facing one another across a lotus bud.
