Jar3503/1 a-b

Small container with rectangular opening and circular base (part a), with a separate lid (part b). Each edge of the container opening has a semi-circular indent in the centre. Sides of container have large imprinted semi-circles, extending from the top edge to the middle of the body. All are coloured a metallic grey-brown, from raku firing. All other parts of exterior are glazed. Bottom edges of semi-circles are coloured red-brown. Rest of body is a dark olive green. Artist signature on base. Lid (part b) has a rectangular base and rounded top. Protruding semi-circles in centres of each edge, fitting into indents along top of container. Bottom half of lid is unglazed and coloured a light grey. Three lightly incised lines border edges. Top is glazed and plain white. Interior of container and lid are metallic grey.

Container3503/4 a-b

Four-legged rectangular container (part a) with triangular prism-shaped lid (part b); both are painted black with additional decorations overtop. Sides and ends of the container have identical designs. Each end has a yellow “U” shape bordering the bottom edge and sides, with black lines throughout. In centre is a rounded, beige rectangle, with a black line in the middle. Rows of green dots border top and bottom of the rectangle. Each side has beige rectangles, along the left and right edges, that have columns of black “L” shapes inside them. There are two rows of large green dots in the middle. All sides are glazed, interiors are unglazed. Base of container is unpainted and unglazed. Legs are decorated with white, yellow and orange polka dots. Artist signature on base. The lid (part b) has an extended lip and interior ridge, that fits into the container body. Along the top of the lid are curved and angular protrusions, with a pentagon-like shape in the centre. All are painted orange and have white dots throughout. The sides and ends of the lid have identical designs. Each end has an orange “O” shape in the bottom centre. The left and right sides are bordered with rows of small green dots. Each side has a central design of a wide, curved yellow line with orange diagonal lines throughout. In the bottom left and right corners are beige squares, with black diagonal lines across them. The top edge is trimmed with green triangles, the sides are covered with green dots.

Jar3503/3 a-b

Rounded rectangular container with four short feet (part a) and separate lid (part b). Both components have a rough texture and are mottled. Colours range from maroon, dark purple to dark orange. Base of container has swirls of metallic greys, blues and greens. Interiors of both are dark grey with silver sheens. Lip of container has a sloped edge. Along the opening there are two triangular protrusions. Seam along back left corner. Small green felt pads are attached to the curved feet. Artist signature on base. Lid (part b) curves upwards, towards the right end, and has long sides. Two triangular indents along bottom edge, fitting over the protrusions along the top edge of the container. Short “U” shaped handle in centre of lid. Handle is hand-moulded.

Spindle Whorl3501/2 a-f

Six circular whorls (part a-f). Part a: orange coloured and dome-like in shape; top has a slight curve, bottom is flat; hole through the centre; incised, alternating square motif, with dots, around body. Base has a wavy line, with pointed crests, incised around the centre opening. Part b: black-grey colour and dome-like in shape; top has a slight curve, bottom is flat; hole through centre; raised, vertical rectangle motif around body. Part c: top is orange, sides and bottom are grey-white; top and bottom are flat. Hole through centre; raised, horizontal rectangle motif around body. Part d: dark grey-brown colour with flat top and bottom; hole through centre; vertical rectangle motif around body, done in low relief. Part e: dark grey colour with a slightly curved top and bottom; hole through centre; undecorated. Part f: dark grey colour with tapering edges; hole through centre; undecorated.

Ceramic shaft tomb figure of a standing male wearing a headdress. Figure is coloured dark cream with additional red decorations. Figure has a squat, rounded torso with wide rectangle-like limbs. Back is flat. Feet are spaced shoulder width apart and have very high arches. Arms are bent at sides with hands held outward. “V” shapes painted across chest and back, framing neck. Diagonal lines, pointing inward, decorate front and back of shoulders. Horizontal line along waist on back of figure. Male has large oval-shaped ears, done in red, and no facial features. Headdress has a triangle projecting outward from the forehead, with a protruding red semi-circle underneath. Top edge of headdress bordered with a dark red band. Back is concave.

Tripod Bowl3529/3

Circular tripod bowl with a wide mouth and globular body. Lip of opening is high and flares outward slightly. Sides of body are lobed; tops have a raised curve, bottoms flatten towards bowl base. Legs are oval-shaped and squat.

Figure3505/2

Hollow ceramic head wearing a headdress. Eyes, nose and lips are carved in relief. Eyes are oval-shaped, painted black and have holes drilled in their centres; black eyebrows painted above. Small holes drilled into bottom of nose, imitating nostrils. Mouth is open with the bottom lip sticking out. The head has protruding ears with holes drilled through the lobes. Holes are trimmed with black paint. Headdress has long panels that hang down the back and sides of the face. Panels and edges are carved in relief and painted black. Rectangle-like protrusion, with rounded front, carved in relief on top of headdress. Curved edge visible from front of headdress, remainder visible from back. Rest of headdress, covering top and back of head, is sunken and undecorated.

Su Wu3510/8

Shiwan style pottery figure of Su Wu, the faithful diplomat of the Han Dynasty who was forced to become a sheep herder, wearing long flowing robes glazed in a copper-red plum glaze, with a wood staff and long white beard. He has a small white ram at his feet and a long cord of shells wrapped around the top of his staff. Figure is hollow. Interior has impressed artist mark and is inscribed with the artist’s signature.

Li Tieguai3510/6

Shiwan stoneware figure of Li Tieguai, the Daoist immortal who represents the sick and poor, dressed in beggar’s clothes and seated, with hands on his right knee, on a large double calabash gourd (hulu), glazed in copper red. The male figure is partially wrapped in a white blanket, and wearing a white knotted headband. Underneath him is a long crutch. The piece is hollow and stamped with the artist's seal along the bottom edge. Characters written along interior.

Horse Figure3510/5

Pottery horse with partial sancai (three colour) glaze. Off-white standing horse with the saddle area and nose glazed in sancai colours of red and amber. The horse's head is slightly turned to the left, and it wears a green saddle on a chestnut coloured blanket. Red decorations across saddle. Predominantly unglazed body with areas of chestnut brown on the nose and forehead, and green and brown on the saddle. The horse is standing four-square on a rectangular base and has a short tail. Body is hollow.
