8. TWINED SPRUCE ROOT HAT Haida-style weaving; painted blue-green It appears that this hat was painted blue-green only, while No. 3 had a pattern painted on it, and was then painted over. Many Haida-style hats in museum collections have this finish, which may have been applied as rainproofing.
S'abadeb-Seattle Art Museum Names of individual basket makers are rarely known, although Judge James Wickersham--who collected this basket in 1899 just a few years after it was made--noted the name of the weaver, Siagut. Today, more scholars are turning their attention toward uncovering the work of particular artists.
