Brown bentwood oval box with lid (part b). Box is one piece, with bent sides with bevelled edges forming a flush side, sewn together with two parallel rows of baleen(?) and leather. Rectangular walrus tusk clasp between sewn rows with hooked appendage and six holes (or sets of holes), two form 'eyes' with hook as 'nose', attached through holes with leather strips. Two parallel grooves at top and bottom of sides. On opposite side is second walrus tusk rectangle with five sets of holes with leather strips attaching it to box. One top corner has wooden pegged (three) strip of wood; a longer damaged pegged (six) strip on end. Two holes on non-clasp side for attaching lid to box. Both are broken, remnants of one are on box, the other. Lid has a horizontal row on top of 7 beads with the central bead being light blue and the others being dark blue.
Painted dance mask with twig headdress and cedar bark fringe. Mask has a very bulbous black forehead with white painted ridge above and below curving eyebrow band. Eyes are close to nose with round hole outlined in white and enclosed by a black eye-shape. A blue contoured teardrop shape expands out on both sides surrounded by a white band. Large hooked nose with white tip and curving band dividing the black top from the red bottom and extending to corners of mouth. Very large triangular nostrils on underside of nose. Tip of nose meets large rounded chin. Deep-set mouth is slightly opening showing 2 rows of even white teeth. Red curving, contoured split u-shapes on cheeks. There is a lip around outside of mask, painted with large blue circles. The areas between are natural cedar. Three partially red painted fir boughs (without needles) are mounted into metal springs in the top of the mask, 2 with masking tape and one with leather. White ostrich feathers are attached by white thread at 5 places and around cedar bark tuff at top front. Tuff is braided to sides. Cedar bark fringe on top back is loosely tied together with white string dyed brown. The string end has passed through hole on side where leather thong is tied. Thong also ties on opposite side and at top, centre. Thong is looped at centre back. Bottom cedar bark fringe is attached to bottom of mask with string which is loosely tied across fringe in 2 rows. Cedar bark strands alternate between natural and red dyed. Inside of mask is partially covered with red sprayed paint.
Northwest Coast style humanoid face mask, painted white. Wide flat forehead has five stitches in a vertical row at right of centre; beaten copper brows are nailed above bulging circular hollow copper eyes, slightly indented at base, in black pointed ridged eyelid lines; straight nose has indented semi-circular red nostrils; open mouth has protruding red lip bands; two stitches in a diagonal line between nose and upper lip; black bands with three rows of dots extend from lower corners of eyes, curve on cheek to terminate at side rim; nails in some holes along upper rim. On reverse, cord is looped and knotted through a hole in each side rim, second piece of cord is looped and knotted through a hole in centre upper rim and around the first cord. Piece of folded cloth nailed above eyes; two nails at left of nose. Stitches and nails are to repair crack; paint flaking; copper on eye and brow on left have green areas.
Wild man or Bukwus mask with three shades of green paint on a skeletal face, with red, white and black used to emphasize facial features. Red horsehair has been stapled to top rim and centre of dome-like forehead; on either side of forehead natural wood horn-like projections have been pegged and glued, projection on left is loose; black brows, outlined in white, graduate in size from bridge of nose to side orbital ridge; curvilinear design from brows to side rim; sunken eye areas with hollow eyes; hooked nose with hollow flaring nostrils; bulbous protrusion on each cheek; wide gaping mouth exposes buck-teeth of natural wood; black and white form line design extends from nostrils around mouth to chin; white line divides cheek and chin from jaw. On reverse, four leather strips pass through holes drilled at sides and top and artist signature. Small sliver of wood lifted from front at side on right; peg for horn-like protrusion on left visible on reverse.
Clayoquot wild man face mask that has fur nailed and glued to the upper rim and to the protruding eyebrow ridge, end fur on eyebrows melds with the fur on the rim. Three semi-circular grooves on the forehead. Two shorter grooves extend from the upper rim to the eyebrow ridge. Hollow semi-oval eyes. Three semi-circular grooves on each cheek. Hook nose with black nostrils. Light wash of green paint on the forehead, the eye area, the cheek, and the nose. Mouth protrudes in a pursed-like shape with black lips. Pointed upturned chin. On the reverse, there are two metal 'eyes' screwed at eye level while a leather strip is tied to one eye. Signed 'Clayoquot Wildman J. David 80'.
Cup-form swivel toggle, or harness swivel, with a piece of flat leather knotted through the hole in one end. On cup bowl side, a short tang faces in over bowl. Cree syllabics are incised on tang, either side of concave bowl surface and in dots at shaft at leather thong end. Rows of dots encircle shaft end; two rows of dots at outside, one row towards cup. Outside convex surface has longitudinal ridge crossed by a single row with u-shaped towards double row along rim. Shaft end has two rows of dots at outside circumference and at cup. A double row of dots in a u-shape, cross the centre line at each end. Leather thong is cut at outside end with a hole 1 cm from the end.
Black, white, and red wild man mask that has thirty-two holes drilled into the upper rim with strands of brown hair glued into each hole. Black dome-like forehead. Hollow circular eyes are surrounded by a sunken white eye area that extends downward into the nose that has curling hollow red nostrils. Wing-like white cheek ridges meld with the nose and terminate at the protruding upper lip. Upturned pointed chin. Pursed-like hollow open mouth outlined in black while the lips and the interior of the mouth are red. On the reverse, there are two metal 'eyes' screwed in at the sides of mask at eye level while a leather strip passes through both eyes and is tied. Signed 'J. David 84'.
Red and black eagle spirit mask that has white fur on the top rim and the eyebrows. White fur 'hair' consists of many small pieces of fur sewn together and then nailed to the top rim and the brow ridge. Dome-like forehead has form line design beginning at the brow on the left and extending diagonally across the forehead to the top rim on the right consisting of two red split u's. Solid diagonal black line on the left of the forehead extends from the side to the top rim. The cut out circular eyes are red surrounded by a black area. The black nose is hooked. Raised cheek ridges. On the left, there are two diagonal lines, one narrow and the other wide, extending from the cheek ridge to the lower rim. At the side on the right, there are two diagonal lines, one wide and the other narrow, extending from the lower rim through the corner of the mouth to the end high on the side rim. Open mouth with twelve white shell teeth, teeth glued on to a leather strip which is nailed to back of mouth opening. Chin is slightly raised. On the reverse, there are two metal 'eyes' screwed in at eye level.
Forehead mask of a woman, whose head is a rattle, sits on the forehead of an eagle; hair, black wire wrapped around ends, is inserted into eleven drilled holes on top of the woman's head; black and orange-red paint are used to emphasize features; front human head has black brows and eyes; wide flat nose has orange-red nostrils; wide continuous orange-red lip band; prominent cheek ridges; ears on either side of head; back of head is yellow cedar with flat face depicted in incised circle; black brows; circular black eyes; broad flat nose with orange-red nostrils; wide continuous orange-red lip band. Body, shown only on front, has arms slightly extended and bent, elbows and forearms rest on eagle's brows, hands are downturned; legs are drawn up next to chest, four black claw-like toes on each foot. Eagle has black brows with horizontal rows of short orange- red lines; black bulbous eyes; thin sharp beak incorporates wide orange-red lip band, flattened semi-circular nostrils on either side; orbital ridge melds with cheek ridge which follows line of lip band; triangular depressed area under lower beak. On reverse, a leather strip is attached to either side by a singular stitch of white waxed cord, cord is also tied around leather. Signed inside: 'B' 'D'/87 'Dempsey Bob Tahltan Tlingit.' Unpainted wood is finished with oil.
Alder wood eagle mask with bear's head in centre of forehead; copper nails used to attach black and white bear's fur to outer rim; one stitch of white waxed cord attaches fur between bear's ears; white fur along eagle's jaw line; hair, with black wire wrapped ends, extend from four holes drilled into rim of bear's ears; features are emphasized in black and orange-red paint; bear's ears are outlined in black, centre has incised split u above two vertical lines; ridge in centre of forehead; black slanting brows; black eyes; orange-red nostrils and lip band; upper teeth are visible, top and bottom incisors overlap lip band. Eagle has black brows with small horizontal incised lines, fur overlaps brows; bulbous protruding eyes; orbital ridge melds with protruding cheek ridge; thin sharply curved beak incorporates wide orange-red lip band; flattened semi-circular orange-red nostrils on either side of beak. On reverse, leather strips attached to either side by one stitch of white cord; mask signed 'Dempsey Bob, Tahltan-Tlingit '87'; incised 'B' in a 'D' next to signature; unpainted wood finished with oil.
