Canteen2013.64.8

Polychrome pottery canteen with quail and plant design on the flat side centered inside a large flower. Hilda is the sister of Robert Tenorio, the noted potter from Santa Domingo) and she learned pottery from him. Initially Hilda and Arthur made the pots and Robert deocrated however within two years Arthur was doing all of the painting. They used natural clays, and the Rocky Mountain bee plant (wild sopinach) and honey to make their black color and thus achieve the soft glowing tones.

Headdress3051/6

Bear claw headdress. Thick leather strip, stitched at the ends with 13 long, curved bear claws sewn on with sinew at their proximal ends. Distal ends are blunted and a small hole has been bored through each tip for cotton string to pass through, connecting the claws to each other in a circle. Several claws have come unattached to the string, and several are missing.

Qur'an3039/1 a-b

Book of the Qur’an, inscribed in naskh script inside the cover. The first few pages are highly coloured and decorative. Most other pages of script are bordered by a simple band of gold and blue, with most of the script in black and red ink. Chapter headers are painted with brightly coloured decorative bands. The cover has a flowered pattern painted(?) onto the outside; a flower patterned paper adhered to the inside covers. Pages are loosely bound with string, currently only attached in one place to the cover. (Part b is a soft fabric cover that is sewn in the shape of an envelope; in storage.)
