String Puppet3351/5 a-g

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Rinaldo. Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a small blonde moustache and goatee, and long blonde hair. He wears a shiny green tunic and a matching cape adorned with gold applique and fringe. He wears full gold-coloured body armour with a copper lion design on the chest, and a helmet with visor, adorned with a lion on top. The neck guard (part c) detaches. The left wrist has a length of grey cord tied to it, which attaches an oval gold shield, with a lion on it, to his forearm. The right hand is clenched in a fist, which a small silver-coloured metal sword with a straight blade (parts d-f) is inserted through. The threaded end of blade also inserts through the eye of one end of a long metal rod (part g) with an eye hook on each end. There is a metal band across the bottom of each heel. The body is jointed at the elbows, shoulders, and hips – with limbs held together by fabric underneath his outfit.

Opera dei Pupi puppet of the character named Orlando (Charlemagne’s nephew Roland). Three-dimensional marionette carved of wood (part a) with detachable head (part b) mounted on a long, hooked metal rod. He has a small dark brown moustache and brown hair. He wears a shiny red tunic and matching cape, adorned with gold applique and fringe. He wears full body armour with a helmet that has a visor, adorned with an eagle on top, and a train of bright red feathers. The left wrist has a length of brown cord tied to it, which also attaches a small circular gold shield, with an eagle circled by eight small flowers, to the forearm. Rectangular metal amulet with concave or "pinched" sides and bottom. The amulet contains layers of rectangles, diamonds, and triangles in silver with gold and copper accents. A raised silver sphere is set within the diamond at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a long black fibre cord, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet. The tassels are wrapped with thin bands of light brown, dark brown, and teal.

Rectangular metal amulet with concave or "pinched" sides. The amulet contains layers of rectangles, diamonds, and triangles in silver with gold and copper. A raised silver sphere is set at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a cord of five thin strips of leather, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet. Two large dark red leather tassels hang on either side of the amulet, and are each wrapped with black and white checkerboard pattern bands and other colours. Back marked with five small vertical lines, one above two rows of two, with a horizontal line between the two rows of two.

A single black oval stone is set at centre. The front is etched with geometric designs and script. Strung on a long black cord, which attaches at both upper corners of the amulet. Two large brown leather tassels hang from the cord on either side of the pendant, and are each decorated with light teal bands and checkerboard or zigzag patterns in black and white at the top.

Single legging of woven cotton cloth covered entirely with embroidery in deep red silk with additional designs in dark blue, orange, dark green and light green silk thread. Copper(?) metal thread embroidery between each of the outer two bands of plaiting. Side with seam decorated with pounded metal discs with a simple floral mark at centre and one metal button. Backed with woven cotton cloth.

Chest Ornament3376/1

Chest ornament composed of three sections with rolled horizontal beaded bands attached at either end by small rounded copper(?) buttons. The centre section three strips are covered in light pink beading with white, black, white, red, and white beading on either end. Hanging is a beaded rectangular ornament with two sections of blue and white checkerboard pattern, with three vertical bands of red / white / red. Ends in short fringe of black beading with white tips. Long twisted ropes hang down on either side of the chest piece with large blue and light yellow beads, copper rings and bells.

Long-handled ladle with a cup-shaped bowl. The handle has small hammered squares lining the edge, and crossing the centre five times leaving X-shapes. The end of the handle curls under creating a loop which a copper ring is threaded through. The side of the bowl has a lip for pouring.

Ancestor figure made of wood with copper and shell inlay. Figure is shown seated on a platform with feet together, and hands on ankles. He wears a tall elaborate headdress with rolled side elements represented with rope-like inlaid copper. The same copper is heavily wrapped around each forearm. The chest, nipples, top of head, front of headdress, and edge of platform are inlaid with small circular copper pieces. He has a very narrow and pointed face, with lips and jaw jutting out, and eyes of inlaid cowrie shells.
