String PuppetEh161 a-b

Male puppet figure: detachable head (part b) has a rod that extends down from the neck and fits into a socket in the top of the torso of the body (part a). The figure is wearing a green and off-white floral print shirt, an off-white fabric skirt, and off-white pants underneath the skirt with horizontal green, grey and pink lines. The figure's legs have been wrapped in newspaper (horse racing results ?), and the figure has been blindfolded with a strip of green, blue, red and off-white fabric.

A woman's woven belt with red, and blue geometric motifs on an off-white background. Lined and stiffened with a light-weight cotton canvas band. Tied with red and blue twisted wool cords trimmed with large red pompoms that have blue centres.

Tunic853/5

Men's dark blue wool tunic. The tunic has high standing collar and centre front opening with hook and eye closure, edged with green wool. The tunic hangs straight from the shoulders in front, back is slightly fitted above waist and is flared below the waist by means of triangular gores. There are multicoloured bands (red predominating) of wool textile, embroidered ribbons and rickrack at collar, shoulders, neck opening, upper back, cuffs and bottom hem. There is a concealed inner pocket on the chest, accessible through the centre front opening. The inside is unlined.

Rod PuppetIb330 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached, and is painted black with a beige, brown and black patterned skirt. The head has a pink face and neck with black hair, moustache and goatee, as well as a red, blue, white and gold hat.

A hand woven off-white rectangular table runner with wide bands of multi-coloured embroidery in geometric diamond-shaped designs at each end. The diamond shapes are bordered by yellow, orange, orange-red, and green S-shapes on a black background outlined with red. At opposite ends of each corner, there is a pair of orange or yellow star shapes with yellow or orange centres respectively. The centre of each diamond shape begins with a pair of yellow dots surrounded by a green square and a pair of orange squares on a black background. This is surrounded by red lines, then orange geometric shapes, and then pairs orange-red, and green squares having orange centres separated by yellow and orange cross shapes outlined with black on an off-white background. Plain in the centre. Ends hemmed.

Round, brown basket with a flat bottom and slightly flared sides. Base is made from a circular birch bark panel with a white and brown maple leaf design of stitched porcupine quills in the centre. Two bands of coiled sweet grass with a single band of zigzagging open work between them comprise the sides; coiled sweet grass sides are all stitched with black thread.

The body has jointed arms and legs, and plant fibre that has been dyed blue-green represents the hair. The figure is also wearing one earring on her right ear, and her feet are reversed. Skirt is a yellow, pink and green floral print on a geometric square and grid patterned blue background. Shirt is purple with white dots grouped in circles.
