Trousers made of white ramie. Trousers have a wide, straight waistband from which the legs angle out in a wide V. There is a continuous seam on the inner edge of the legs and rounded crotch and second seams, front and back, about one third of the width away from the centre seam. An additional seam, front and back, angles away from the centre of the crotch to one of the leg seams. The inner edge of the trousers is rounded in a convex curve, narrowing to the ankle. All hems and seams are very narrow.

Padded under-trousers of fine white cotton fabric, lined with coarser off-white fabric. Pants are angled out from the pleated waistband to the ankles. Waistband opening at the back, attached to narrower long ties. Pleats face towards centre seams, front and back. Flared panels are attached to each side of the back opening, which is carried on in the open inner leg seam, sewed together just above the ankle. Dark blue ribbons of shiny silk are attached to each inner leg seam at the bottom. There is a horizontal seam in the outer white fabric at about knee level.

Skirt376/1

Green skirt of open weave. The skirt is made of two panels of green nylon fabric woven with roundels enclosing a floral motif and stylized character. The skirt is open at the back and lined with white nylon mesh. The panels are pleated and inserted into a green band. The green nylon band is woven with small roundels enclosing stylized characters and lined with white cotton gauze. The pleats carry through to the edge of the band on the left side, but not the right. The upper edge of the band is straight, but the white cotton gauze lining projects above it in slight scallops. Attached to the scalloped points are two shoulder straps of white cotton gauze. At both ends of the band are sewn narrow ties of white cotton gauze, roughly machine stitched with white thread.

Doll depicting a female figure (a) carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. The doll's face and arms are painted white with the hair, eyes and eyebrows painted in white and the mouth painted in red. Her hair is knotted in a bun at the nape of her neck, secured with a long hairpin and covered with a purple ribbon with four coloured ornaments. Over two pairs of white under trousers with a back slit, the outer pair of which is voluminous, she wears a pleated pink skirt (b) opening at the back with a white fine cotton waistband with long ties, and short green jacket fastening with green ribbons tied in a single loop bow. Over these is a full-length green silk gored coat lined with white silk, white cotton cuffs, outer neck facings that are burgundy, white, and pink from the outside in, and burgundy panels under the arms. At the top of the centre back is pasted a white rectangle that is wider at the lower end. The sides of the coat meet at the centre, and it is tied at the top with double ties in a single loop bow, one pair pink and the other burgundy. Below the ties are three spherical buttons with loop buttonholes. She wears shoes with pointed, upturned toes covered in pink fabric and painted with a black linear and loop decoration.

Waist BagN3.37

A small flat bag made of dark blue silk damask with an overall pattern of lozenges and small circles. At the top, the blue silk is folded inside where it is sewn with an invisible seam to the white cotton lining. Main body of the bag is shaped like a vertical rectangle with triangular projections on both sides created by folding and holding the folds in place with a circular pink cylindrical cord. The cord ends at the front with elaborate knots, culminating in five loops. Fastened to the three centre loops, there are stuffed triangles, one each of pink, yellow, and light green silk. Attached to the lower edge of each triangle, there are three, four, and five tabs, respectively, of silk fabric in various colours. Each triangle is embroidered with floral motifs and each has pompoms on the side points. The tabs fastening the top point of the yellow and pink triangles to the cord are wrapped in strips of silver and gold paper, respectively.

Quilted Socks1553/10 a-b

Pair of baby’s socks (part a-b) made of white fabric, finely quilted in narrow parallel rows. The rows on the foot are vertical; those on the front of the ankle are diagonal. Socks are flat, with a seam around outer edge. The two layers are joined with an invisible stitching seam at the top. They are embroidered with floral motifs in blue-green and dark pink and four lozenges in dark pink and green. There is a dark pink tassel on the toe and a long white tie attached at the back of the ankle.

Waist BagN3.34

A small round bag made of red silk damask lined with white cotton fabric. Top of the bag is closed with pleating threaded onto two red cords joined at the ends with elaborate red, and gold knots and four tassels, two at each end. Two tassels are light green and pink while the other two are dark blue and yellow. All tassels are wrapped with gold thread at the top. Each tassel thread ends in a tiny circle. The upper edge of the bag is folder under to join the white cotton lining with an invisible seam. There are embroidered designs, some with gold couching, on both surfaces of the bag. On one side, there are four Korean? characters in different colours, below which, there are floral images. Below them, at the centre, there are two birds facing each other on a rainbow pattern. The other side of the bag is embroidered with pink and yellow flowers on green stems.

Shoes984/12 a-b

Pair of man’s funeral shoes made of fine white leather. The sides are low, but there is an upward extension at the heel, which has a centre seam covered with five vertical cotton strings. Section covering toes is very short; the main body of each shoe is open. There is narrow piping finishing the vertical seam at the front of the toe section, and wider piping around the upper edge of the shoes. The soles are made of layers of natural brown leather slightly thicker at the toe and heel ends, and have numerous iron cleats at the front and heel. The soles are attached to the body of the shoes with a row of stitching around the edge of the soles, and there is a row of heavy, even stitches around the edge of the white leather. The shoes are lined with white leather, and have insoles of woven grey wool fabric.

Pair of women’s shoes made of smooth black leather, lined with dark brown leather. The shoes have low sides but have a rounded extension up over the heel. The toe area is curved upwards and comes to a point. There is a central vertical seam closing the toe area, and a vertical seam at the heel, both with stitches concealed on the inside. The shoes are open along almost their entire length except for a small area over the toes. The opening is finished with narrow piping of the same material. The uppers are stitched to the soles with small even stitches of heavy thread. The rigid soles are formed of multiple layers of leather and taper in slightly except at the heel, which is slightly raised. The soles are covered with rows of iron hobnails except for the area under the arch.

Long coat with both the outer layer and lining made of fine white cotton fabric. The coat is made of ten flared vertical panels. It overlaps to the right, with two long, wide ribbons of the same fabric for ties. The coat is secured on the inside with shorter, narrow ties of the same material, positioned at the same level. When closed, the overlap forms a V neck edged with a stiff collar covered with shiny white fabric patterned with characters. The ribbon ties are centred at the lower ends of inner and outer facings with rounded edges. The sleeves are attached with a vertical seam somewhat beyond the shoulder and have a lower seam shaped in a convex curve, narrowing to the wrist. There is a small underarm reinforcement on each side, with an additional rectangular reinforcement or repair in the left underarm. At waist level there are openings at each side. All seams are concealed.
