Textile915/8

Square wall hanging or bed cover made from five panels of boldly patterned silk warp face ikat textile (five colours: bright pink, yellow, purple, blue and pinkish white) stitched together side by side along their selvages. The textile is woven with bright pink weft, giving the object an overall pink appearance. The hanging or cover is edged on all four sides with narrow bias strips of machine printed cotton textile (multi-coloured floral designs on dark red background), and is backed with dark red cotton broadcloth. The ikat side is quilted onto the backing at widely spaced intervals, along the seam lines, using red thread. The silk ikat textile has been pieced together in many places. Bound on all four edges with bias strips of silk and cotton ikat textile. A strip of white cotton broadcloth, 4 cm wide, is hand-sewn along one short edge, and there are small fibre loops attached at two corners (one made of narrow gold braid, the other of white and blue printed cotton textile).
