Pair of knitted socks. Large socks are rounded at the toe, have a defined heel, long through the calf, with a slightly tighter band at top. Foot is white with encircling strips of patterning, including open blue squares on an orange background, and lines in green, pink, and blue. Leg of socks are done in green squares containing a pink rectangle, and red squares with a blue and orange rectangle. Socks are connected to each other by a string at the toes.

Cantonese Opera Robe3251/2 a-b

Robe is a vibrant pink, with long wide sleeves, and short water sleeves falling from each wrist. Collar stands upright, with lapel crossing over chest to tie at right side of torso under the arm. Decoration is thread embroidered flowers and foliage in dark green and blue embellished with translucent beads, applied around each wrist, on chest and neck, and both front and back across skirt. Interior of robe is lined in cotton. Stiff headdress (part b) is covered with the same fabric, and holds similar embroidery on front. Shape is squared with wide, scalloped rim at top that curls near the ears. Two long ties fall from the sides, each with an embroidered panel at bottom.

Necklace. Many small handmade beads strung on a twisted cotton string. Each bead is similar in look with a tubular green-brown core encircled at centre by an attached white glass ring that has been flattened in several places to create indentations and points.

Cotton sleeveless tunic, with a rounded neck, in dark blue. Around neck is a line of embroidery in white thread, scalloped top and bottom with a block and feather pattern on the inside. At centre of shirt on both front and back are large embroidered motifs in white, in colour block and linear patterning.

Cotton dress. Garment body is rectangular, with three-quarter length sleeves, and a round neck. Hem is below the knees. Torso and shoulders are made of a cotton fabric with peacock feather design on a background of tiny brown leaves and green foliage. Dress bottom, neck panel and arms are black fabric with cotton embroidery showing triangles in red, yellow and white on arms, at hem, and centre of chest and back, while zigzagging lines of embroidery in red, orange, white and green circle the neck. Small red and yellow diamonds edge the bottom of this design.

Long embroidered cloth. On a black cotton ground is stitched in thick synthetic thread a variety of designs and motifs, such as concentric diamond shapes, long stripes in red, white, orange and blue, shorter thin lines in yellow, green red and white, and more complicated motifs in similar colours. Thick black and red fringe hangs from each end.

Cotton blanket. Large textile is made of fourteen long thin pieces of weaving that have been stitched together. Each contains the same designs, alternating in some instances, matched in others to create long continuous lines. Near centre of blanket, Niger’s flag appears many times as well as patches with Niger’s colours of green and orange. Other designs include red or black lines in a variety of thicknesses, and several diamond shapes motifs. Nearer the edges the majority of design is short lines made of black dots on a white ground, along with stripes in red, black and white. A single patch of blue sits close to one end. Ends of blanket have short white fringe.

Cotton blanket. Large textile is made of seven long thin pieces of weaving that have been stitched together. Each completes part of the overall decoration of the blanket, with a variety of black stripes in various thicknesses, along with two smaller panels to either side of centre in blue, red and orange, four longer panels in red, orange and black, and small elongated dots in red and blue. Ends are left unfinished, creating a short fringe.

The Harpist3010/21 a-d

Male figure playing a harp. Male figure (part a) wearing knee-length black robes with a white tie at the waist and a necklace made of white and red seeds. Both arms and legs are moveable. The large harp (part b) has two feet and is strung with nylon. The figure has large hands with long fingers, and an open mouth in which a dark brown wooden pipe (part c) fits. The figure stands on a wooden platform (part d), which has been painted white on top, and has four leather loops for footholds.
