Carved wooden figure depicting a standing woman. Her head is shown in profile and is facing down. She has a long, oval-shaped face with pronounced eyebrows and lips, and a long, wide nose. Her eyes are circular and inlaid with bone and obsidian. There are incised lines across her head, imitating hair, that extend into two buns, protruding from the back of her head. The figure’s body is flat and curves towards the left. Legs have a curved front and flat back. Feet are circular and have incised lines along the front edges, imitating toes. Her right arm is bent with her hand resting on her stomach. Her left arm is parallel to her body, with her hand resting near her groin. On the back of the figure, her shoulder blades and buttocks are carved in low relief. She has a white string knotted around her neck. Inscription on the centre of her back, reading "Soquel 1909."

Baby Carrier3480/2

Goat hide baby carrier decorated with cowrie shells and trade beads. Carrier is rectangular with long, looped straps attached to the top corners, and shorter strands of hide extending from the bottom corners. Thin strip of hide tied through top straps, at ends. Exterior surface of strip is coloured red; front of hide carrier is red-brown, back is naturally coloured. Straps are covered in rows of alternating cowrie shells and dark blue glass beads. Fringe extends from the bottom edges of the straps, hanging overtop of the carrier body. Fringe is covered in white and dark blue beads. Upper half of carrier has a design of two square outlines. Borders made of rows of alternating cowrie shells and blue beads. Each square has a floral design in the upper corner, made of shells and beads. Hide tab underneath square motifs, with bead covered fringe along its bottom edge. Small cross, made of cowrie shells and beads, along bottom centre of carrier. Interior of carrier is undecorated.

Doll3477/3

Doll representing a woman carrying a baby. Doll is made of brown fabric and has short black hair. Her facial features are stitched on with thread. She has long thin eyebrows, small eyes, a straight nose and smiling mouth. Eyebrows are done in black, eyes are white and black, nose and mouth done in pink. She is wearing a Basotho-style hat, woven out of plant fibre. The hat is conical with a wide circular brim and loop on top. Hat is stitched to head along forehead. She is dressed in a white short sleeve blouse and red skirt. Both items have curvilinear designs across them, done in black. Skirt also has floral motifs and repeating pattern of Basotho-style hats. Skirt has a back opening and a manufacturer’s mark(?) is printed along the bottom edge. Woman has a white, yellow and brown checkered and striped blanket wrapped around her shoulders, secured with a safety pin. Tucked in the blanket, on her back, is a baby covered in a white and green geometric patterned cloth, with a central house design. Baby is made from brown fabric and has small eyes and a smiling mouth stitched on in white thread. Doll is attached to a white metal stand.

Dress3485/1 a-b

Full length dress with long sleeves and a matching scarf (part b). Dress is made out of printed red and yellow cotton. Designs on red cotton are black teardrop shapes with yellow dotted lines. Designs on yellow are dark brown and light orange floral motifs with dots throughout. Front of dress is predominantly red, with two yellow panels extending from the waist down. Bottom edge is trimmed with yellow fabric, bordered by burgundy ribbons with embroidered geometric motifs. Motifs done in white. Back of dress is predominantly made of the yellow textile with two red panels running down the entire length. Sleeves are red and have yellow cuffs. Cuffs are trimmed with burgundy embroidered ribbons and circular, gold coloured beads. Dress has a square neckline with heavy embroidery around the edges and beneath it, forming a chest piece. Motifs are geometric and floral, with mirrors throughout, done in multiple colours. Beneath chest piece, a burgundy ribbon spans the waist. Burgundy tassels, with white and red beads, hang along the bottom edge. Two panels of sheer black fabric extend from the shoulders to the waist line, framing the chest piece, and hang loosely from there. The panels are trimmed, from the waist down, with burgundy ribbons and circular, gold coloured beads. Tassels hang from the bottom edges. Semi-sheer red undergarment beneath dress. Dress is unlined and has zippered opening along back. Scarf is rectangular and made of sheer yellow fabric. The left and right sides are trimmed with printed red cotton and large burgundy tassels. Tassels are attached to the scarf with strands of black, silver and red beads.

Applique3479/1

Applique textile (arpillera) depicting people in a market scene. Figures and merchandise are three-dimensional and stitched to the larger white cloth. Foreground of cloth is white-brown; middle ground is light green, orange, white and patterned; background is light blue-purple. Entire edge of cloth is trimmed with braided blue yarn. Brown and grey mountains in background, with sun rising in between them. White and blue striped house, with an orange roof, in middle ground towards left side, large tree towards right side. Green embroidery, imitating grass, across the middle. Figures are attached to the middle and foreground. All are white-pink and have black hair. They are wearing various outfits, including skirts, pants, brimmed hats, and short sleeved shirts. Some shirts and skirts have geometric designs, but most are unadorned. The vendors are all kneeling in the foreground with woven plant fibre baskets, full of produce, in front of them. Other people, carrying baskets or cloth bags, walk throughout. The word “Mercado” is embroidered in the top left corner. Textile is adhered to a foam board.

Parka3415/1 a-b

Large blue fabric parka (part a) with deep front pockets. The pocket openings, hem, and cuffs are lined with two rows of white and red ricrac. Above the hem is a Delta braid. Dark blue wool inner coat (part b), with deep purple fabric lining, and wolf fur trim around hood and hem. Decorated with appliqué polar bears on each patch pocket, and two mirrored appliqué designs of a hunter in a light blue parka and red pants dragging a beluga. The manufacturer label reads, 'Handcrafted in the Canadian Arctic by the Inuvik Sewing Centre". Both inner and outer coats have heavy duty metal zippers down front opening.

Blouse3404/1

Mola blouse. Body of blouse composed of red cotton with multi-coloured mola panels; upper bodice area and the short sleeves are made of undecorated purple velveteen material, with a red cotton border around the neckline. Both front and back are similar in design. On the front is written,'K SNIJBONEN', and SAN BLAS' down the sides of the panel. There is a tie at the neck.
