Off-white, short-sleeved cotton top with red and black vertical stripes on both sides. Rounded neckline trimmed with red yarn. Oval-shaped opening, trimmed with red yarn, underneath neckline. Below opening are two thick lines stitched from red yarn that extend to bottom of shirt. Red, green and black yarn decorations on front. Two red and green columns on each side of shirt. Between two columns are four red and black X’s. Bottom of top trimmed with red black-dotted band. Left side of dotted red band, on back, replaced with plain, mint green fabric. Edges of shirt are hemmed and interior is unlined.

Hand Puppet3350/3

Baby puppet. Hand puppet of the Baby character, from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Head, hands and central body carved from wood. Visible wood components- head and hands- painted beige. Character has protruding ears, round cheeks and long button nose. Cheeks are rosy. Mouth is open and painted pink. Eyes are light blue circles with white dots in them. Baby has short red-orange strands of yarn for hair. Character is wearing a red polka-dotted dress and white bib, with lace-like trim. Dress has two rows of wavy blue trim along the bottom edge. Plain wood cylinder, that head is attached to, inside fabric body with rod attached to bottom. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening. Operated by holding the rod inside of the puppet’s body.

Rectangular tie-dye cloth with brown and yellow designs. Cloth has dark brown background with two large, dark yellow diamond outlines on left and right sides. Both outlines span from the top to bottom edges. Inside each outline is a smaller light yellow diamond. Light brown and light yellow crumple patterns surrounding diamond outlines. Left and right sides are unhemmed.

Purse3343/11

Handmade beige leather purse with lizard scale pattern on front and back. Purse is rectangular, has an adjustable shoulder strap, and a rounded flap with a front loop closure. Sides and bottom have lines and X’s embossed along them. Edges of purse are stitched together with plain leather. Interior has a small zippered pocket, along the back.

Iridescent purple damask skirt with pleats and embroidery. Across the top is a wide pink cotton waistband with two loops. The purple damask is woven containing a cloud motif and the Eight Immortal symbols. On the edges of the skirt is a black border with a second border of floral motif on cream ground. On the pleats is a black border, some with an added floral trim. On the front and back panels are appliqué phoenix, bat, peony, vase, coin, fan and sword motifs in pink, red, gold, green and blue. The inside is lined with blue silk.

Belt3363/3

Beaded belt with flap and long beaded neck strap. The belt is composed of two long rectangular strips of hide overlaid with red wool trade cloth that attach to a wide rectangular section of hide at centre. The two strips attach at the back with two mismatched metal buttons. The front section has a flap with red wool facing out, and interior lined with a burgundy with brown floral fabric. All edges finished with blue binding and edged with white beads. The strap is composed of two long pieces of red wool back with beige fabric attached at the neck. The strap has four matching beaded designs in light blue, light brown-yellow and black. The belt flap has three similar sun-like designs in a row in black, white, light pink, light blue, dark blue, and yellow-green. Two more mirrored beaded designs are on each hip in light blue, navy blue, light pink, violet and dark green.

Figure3368/1 a-b

Power figure (nkisi nkondi). Standing male figure (part a) with left arm down at side with hand positioned to hold something, his right arm raised with fingers curled to grasp a spear (part b). The figure has inset glass eyes with painted white pupils. The face is carved with an open mouth with bowed lips, a triangular nose, and large ears. The hair is striped black and orange-brown, and wrapped at the hairline with a plaited fabric band. The body is covered with rusted nails and small triangular metal blades. Strips of fabric are wound throughout the nails, with some bone fragments included. Attached to the chest and abdomen, one above the other, are two rectangular glass-front boxes containing plant fibres and other materials. The glass is covered by grey clay with inset small red beads, leaving a small circular area through which to view its contents, and is wrapped in twine. The figure stands on a rounded rectangular wood base with a large piece missing. The wooden spear has a cylindrical shaft and triangular tip, all carved from a single piece of wood.

Beaded bag composed of a long, thin shoulder strap and long semi-circular hide pouch, overlaid with red wool trade cloth and brown fabric. The front is stitched with a red and white checkered panel and flanked top and bottom two abstract designs in blue, clear, white, and black glass and seed beads. Edges finished with brown binding on the bag, and black binding on the strap. Edged overall in white pony beads.

Hat3357/3

Hat with a pointed gathered fabric top with cross-stitch embroidery (tatreez تطريز). The front of the hat is heavily embroidered with burgundy and black checkerboard design, and the back is plain burgundy fabric. The interior is lined with a light off-white fabric. On each side, a long burgundy fabric flap hangs, both heavily cross stitched in bright geometric designs (including star motifs), with a length of dark green and dark red cord with a flat cross-section. Each strap has the 'Walls of Jerusalem' pattern. The left cord has a short fringe, and the right cord has a long fringe. The burgundy flaps are lined with a green fabric with oval cutouts at ear level. Attached to the hat is a black cord with a flat cross-section that is stitched to a metal loop on either side of the rim of the face, leaving a length of cord dangling on each side.

Rectangular suzani textile composed of three long pieces of beige cotton fabric stitched together on the long edges. Textile is embroidered with silk thread. At centre is a large eight-point star with floral designs within and around the star. There are two small bands of repeating red flowers on a light grey-green vine within a red chain-stitched border. Between the two outer bands are large circular flowers, separated by a diagonal blue vine(?) with alternating yellow and red strip down the centre and small flower flanking each side.
