Cantonese Opera Skirt2701/4 b

A skirt of white synthetic fabric with silver and purple ornamentation that together with a blouse (2701/4 a) forms a costume. The skirt is full and gathered onto a waistband that is open at one side with long ties. It has an overskirt of filmy white fabric. Scattered over the surface are clusters of silver sequins in a tendril pattern. There are bands of purple and silver sequins in a pattern of irregular interlocking circles and a line of sequins near the hem of the skirt.

Cantonese Opera Blouse2701/2 a

A blouse of shiny blue-green fabric decorated with sequins of darker blue-green and silver in a pattern of lotus flowers, stems, and leaves. The blouse opens at the side and diagonally across the top to the collar and has metal snap-fasteners spaced along the opening. It has a high mandarin collar, long, tight sleeves, white lining, and a curved lower edge. The blouse is wrn with a skirt (2701/2 b) as a costume.

Camel Bag2790/29

Fringed camel bag with deep side pockets. Hemp-like fibres in shades of orange, red, brown, green and blue are woven into thick stripes and triangles outlined in white. Along the sides and tops of the pockets is a border made of orange strands, looped around multicoloured rag filler. Bundles of twined strands hang from the top, middle and bottom of pockets.

Shawl2790/28

Large, heavy shawl with needle work paisley pattern. The craftsmanship of the red, blue, green, black, yellow and ivory design is less fine in the wide border. In the centre is a circular area of plain black fabric onto which is emboridered the numbers 22 CO 37 in ivory coloured thread. Other numbers (23222 and 949) are embroidered near two different corners.

Doll2790/20

Female stuffed doll in a bead decorated black coat and red skirt stands on rectangular wood feet. The head is a stuffed and painted piece of canvas with a painted mop-like trim sewn on around the top. A piece of cow hide with hair is wrapped around her shoulders, as are strands of black and white beads and seeds. In her hand, she holds a white hair brush with bead worked base. The legs appear to be wood are covered with a black fabric.

Mask2792/1

Dance mask worn with dance costume (2792/2 a-b). The carved wood male face has life-like features that include glass brown eyes, long upper eyelashes of blonde hair, and painted flesh tone skin, gold teeth, curly gold hair and sideburns, mustache, eyebrows and lower eyelashes. There is a slit opening at the mouth and several holes have been drilled through the surface; the two nostrils, two at the bridge of the nose, one at the top of each ear and one at the top of the head.

Beaded Necklace2790/19

Beaded necklace with one square panel hanging on a long double string of green, yellow and black beads linked together at regular intervals with white bead circles. The panel is filled with a multicoloured house motif within a white ground and has a bottom trim of a double string of blue beads, below which hangs a band of white crochet-like beadwork.

Beaded Necklace2790/17

Beaded necklace (or head band ?) consisting of four square sections of beadwork strung together with large brown seeds and beads of different sizes and colours. Diamond, chevron and linear motifs in red, green, orange, blue and black decorate each of the white sections with crochet-like upper and lower borders. The one larger section has two brass bells hanging from the bottom.
