Cantonese Opera Transforming RobeN1.717

Reversible transformation robe (fan gongzhuang) with a stand-up collar, wide sleeves, side slits and a centre opening with brass frog fasteners. On surface A, the upper front, back and sleeves have phoenix, bat, cash, narcissus, chrysanthemums and peony motifs in silver, yellow, pink, purple and orange on a turquoise ground. The sleeve border has chrysanthemum motif in silver on a black ground. Below the waist the robe divides into overlapping multicoloured strips with canopy, mountain, cloud, chrysanthemum and narcissus motifs in silver. There are green glass eyes and circular mirrors on the front, back and sleeves. On surface B, the front, back and sleeves have crane, chrysanthemum and peony motifs in silver, blue, pink and yellow on a red ground. The collar, sleeve and border bands have a chrysanthemum motif in silver and blue on a red ground. There are green glass eyes, circular mirrors and tin reflectors. The inside lining is natural-coloured linen.

Cantonese Opera VestN1.719

Long pink vest with tassels. The vest has side slits and centre opening with decorative frog closures. On the front and back is a poppy motif in blue on pink ground. The collar, centre opening, sides and bottom hem have borders of black and white geometric shapes on pink ground. There is a detachable border near the bottom with a wave motif in gold and silver. Along the bottom are knotted ecru tassels with flattened cardboard cylinder heads. Each head has a white Hsi motif on blue ground. There are many metal snap fasteners on the front and back. The inside lining is white cotton.

A partial semi-conical-shaped hat with one end part flat, and curving rounded inward with the crown lined in natural burlap. Opposite end flat part is trimmed with red, green, and blue outward pointing triangular cloth flaps. One side is red. The other side has a geometric applique on a black background. Has wool "ribbons" with woven patterns in a natural brown-beige colour, and green, and red.

An apron made from a rectangular panel of heavy cotton textile. Has woven horizontal multi-coloured bands with geometric designs on a brown background. The main design is consisting of a pattern with four narrow bands interspersed between three wide bands and two more narrow bands near the end where the tie are located. The narrow bands have a design consisting of a central red and black line outlined by yellow, green, and red, and bordered by black squares. The wide bands have a main design consisting of a central four-stepped or a Y-shaped interconnected coloured pieces band with the colours of orange, green, red, and yellow outlined by black, yellow, green, red, and bordered by a yellow and green chain-link-like pattern on a black background. Brown fringe at the bottom with a hem at the top. Brown cotton cord is fed through the top hem with allowance to form ties, each of which at the end, has a tassel.

A woman's multi-coloured woven belt with repeated geometric designs of red, green, and off-white predominating. Lined and stiffened with light weight white cotton duck. Fastened with a small brass buckle attached with a leather tab while the opposite end has a narrower strip that has a deisgn consisting or a red zig zag along the middle on an off-white background surrounded by a blue dotted line at either side and outlined with a horizontal red band.

Headdress949/14

A headdress consisting of a rigid crown covered with blue cotton twill on the inside and red cotton on the outside. The outside is decorated with horizontal embroidered bands consisting of a pattern of red and blue diamond shapes. There is also a horizontal row of gold-coloured sequins, above which, there is a short horizontal row of silver-coloured flowers. Along the bottom edge, there is a red fringe. There are five vertical decorative elements consisting of a wool red, white, and green pompom at the top and dangling pendants of beads, tassels, bells, buttons, and shells. Another vertical element os a black cotton band with a cross stitch design which is attached across the inside of the crown and hangs down on the outside.

Beaded band sewn onto a printed cloth backing. The background of the band is made up of brown and white beads. There are a series of dark green diamonds down the centre of the band. Long tassels with beads are attached to each end of the band and are tied together in a loose knot.
