Shirt3377/12 a-e

Garment pieces - bodice (part a), body (part b), two cuffs (part c-d), and one sleeve (part e) - made from a beige cotton. The bodice is heavily embroidered in silk, front and back, with geometric and organic designs with small circular mirrors set within the embroidery. The collar is a pale purple-blue. The front opening has two snap closures. The simple body is composed of multiple pieces of fabric, and flares out slightly, with side slits on either side. The cuffs are dyed a pale purple-blue and embroidered with silk thread, each with a snap closure. The sleeve is a plain, tube-like construction, with purple-blue staining on end where it appears to have been cinched.

Hat3377/6

Small square-shaped hat with a pointed top. Hat has four sides, now folded flat on opposing sides. The exterior is black, and the band is decorated with a repeating scalloped design in off-white silk(?) thread. The upper triangular area of each side is decorated with an embroidered paisley design in off-white silk(?). The hem is edged with a dark black-blue trim. The interior is lined with a bright red fabric.

Case3343/10

Handmade leather case with tassels attached to top corners on either side. Case is rectangular, has dark brown exterior and beige interior. Embossed designs on exterior and interior of X’s, rectangles, lines and diamonds. Two large accordion pockets on both top and bottom halves of case interior. On bottom half, on pocket closest to front, is an oval shaped pocket and card slot. In between the two bottom accordion pockets is a large zippered pocket. All edges of case are stitched.

Hand Puppet3350/2

Judy puppet. Hand puppet of the Judy character, from a Punch and Judy puppet set. Head and hands carved from wood. Components painted beige. Character has a protruding chin and long, hooked nose. Nose, cheeks and chin are rosy. Lips are red and eyes are light blue. Small red dots in the corners of the eyes. Character is wearing blue eye shadow, has long lashes and large black eyebrows. Dark brown lines on face to highlight nostrils, mouth, chin, furrowed brow, shadows under eyes and ears. Judy has short strands of yellow yarn for hair and is wearing a white, lace-like bonnet secured with a red checkered bow. Character is wearing a light blue, white-dotted dress, with lacy cuffs, and a white, lace-like apron secured with two red checkered ties. Metal ring along bottom edge of body opening.

Puppet Prop3350/13

Puppet voice prop called a swazzle, from a Punch and Judy puppet show. Made of two thin, rectangular pieces of aluminum wrapped in cotton tape. Cotton looped around the exterior with a single strand running through the middle, separating the two pieces of aluminum. Centre of metal pieces bend outwards slightly, giving the swazzle an irregular oval-shape. Bends also create space between the metal pieces and central piece of cotton tape separating them. Thin looped thread attached to exterior cotton tape on the left side.

Off-white, short-sleeved cotton top with red and black vertical stripes on both sides. Rounded neckline trimmed with red yarn. Oval-shaped opening, trimmed with red yarn, underneath neckline. Below opening are two thick lines stitched from red yarn that extend to bottom of shirt. Red, green and black yarn decorations on front. Two red and green columns on each side of shirt. Between two columns are four red and black X’s. Bottom of top trimmed with red black-dotted band. Left side of dotted red band, on back, replaced with plain, mint green fabric. Edges of shirt are hemmed and interior is unlined.

Handmade beige leather purse with lizard scale pattern on front and back. Purse is rectangular, has an adjustable shoulder strap, and a rounded flap with a front loop closure. Sides and bottom have lines and X’s embossed along them. Edges of purse are stitched together with plain leather. Interior has a small zippered pocket, along the back.

Iridescent purple damask skirt with pleats and embroidery. Across the top is a wide pink cotton waistband with two loops. The purple damask is woven containing a cloud motif and the Eight Immortal symbols. On the edges of the skirt is a black border with a second border of floral motif on cream ground. On the pleats is a black border, some with an added floral trim. On the front and back panels are appliqué phoenix, bat, peony, vase, coin, fan and sword motifs in pink, red, gold, green and blue. The inside is lined with blue silk.

Belt3363/3

Beaded belt with flap and long beaded neck strap. The belt is composed of two long rectangular strips of hide overlaid with red wool trade cloth that attach to a wide rectangular section of hide at centre. The two strips attach at the back with two mismatched metal buttons. The front section has a flap with red wool facing out, and interior lined with a burgundy with brown floral fabric. All edges finished with blue binding and edged with white beads. The strap is composed of two long pieces of red wool back with beige fabric attached at the neck. The strap has four matching beaded designs in light blue, light brown-yellow and black. The belt flap has three similar sun-like designs in a row in black, white, light pink, light blue, dark blue, and yellow-green. Two more mirrored beaded designs are on each hip in light blue, navy blue, light pink, violet and dark green.

Figure3368/1 a-b

Power figure (nkisi nkondi). Standing male figure (part a) with left arm down at side with hand positioned to hold something, his right arm raised with fingers curled to grasp a spear (part b). The figure has inset glass eyes with painted white pupils. The face is carved with an open mouth with bowed lips, a triangular nose, and large ears. The hair is striped black and orange-brown, and wrapped at the hairline with a plaited fabric band. The body is covered with rusted nails and small triangular metal blades. Strips of fabric are wound throughout the nails, with some bone fragments included. Attached to the chest and abdomen, one above the other, are two rectangular glass-front boxes containing plant fibres and other materials. The glass is covered by grey clay with inset small red beads, leaving a small circular area through which to view its contents, and is wrapped in twine. The figure stands on a rounded rectangular wood base with a large piece missing. The wooden spear has a cylindrical shaft and triangular tip, all carved from a single piece of wood.
