Prayer Beads3110/11

String of plastic beads on red-brown braided thread which is tied into loop. Beads are all the same size and shape, but are mottled black, green, yellow-green, red, white, and blue. Two of the beads (first and second from the tied ends) are scarlet red.

Circle of beads. Dark brown wooden beads with two smaller clear plastic beads and one large cream-yellow coloured bead with a clear plastic centre at the tie. Strung on off-white braided string. A green tassel is attached at the tie by pink braided thread and a red-brown plastic bell-shaped cap. Green tassel tied inside knot, under cream-yellow bead.

String of light brown beads on rust coloured braided string. Beads (seeds?) are small and spherical, roughly the same size excluding one oblong wooden dull-lustre bead at the end, and one bell shaped, dull lustre bead following it. Two braided cords made from the rust coloured string come out of the bell shaped bead and end in tassels.

Prayer Bundle3110/6 a-h

Small wooden dagger like object (part a), wrapped in papers (parts c-h), inside a red paper envelope (part b). The front of the red envelope has Chinese characters and images of bamboo and panda bears printed in metallic gold ink. The small wooden stick (dagger?) is round at the handle end, and tied with multiple threads in black, beige, red and tan, forming a tassel. The somewhat flattened blade section has red Chinese characters written on both sides. There are five thin pieces of paper, with writing on them in red ink (parts c-g), folded and wrapped around the stick. All are all wrapped in a small thin piece of red tissue paper (part h), and placed inside the envelope. The bottom of the envelope has ripped open.

Small prayer book bound to two stiff compressed boards, tied with red string. Cover, spine and back cover made with light grey fabric, overlaid on pieces of compressed board. Red string tied in knot on front cover. Cover design shows a seated Buddha. The cover has Chinese charaters and a rectangular border design in silver ink. The board backing is slightly larger than book itself.

Water Puppet3127/7

Water puppet (mua roi nuoc) of Ky Lan unicorn (or lion) character. Puppet is carved from wood with a large head painted gold, a wide nose, and a fierce moveable mouth barring white teeth. Eyes protrude from a scowling brow in front of a curling mane. Eyebrows are fan shaped and multicoloured, attached to the face by fishing line. The midsection is made of plastic tubing to enable movement, and covered by red cotton fabric. The rump of the animal is wood, with moveable yellow legs to each side and a raised tail of green and red curls at centre back. Tin is attached to the interior edges of the head and rump where they meet the red cotton midsection.
