MaskA4498

Wooden, carved grizzly headdress with a long snout painted red and black with white detailing. The muzzle is hinged with a piece of skin nailed on either side of a lower jaw that is inlayed with wooden teeth. There is twine on the inside of the mask that connects to the jaw allowing it to open and close. The face has black edging with grey ovoid-like shapes around the black eyes which are painted on a white background. The head of the mask has been covered with a piece of hide that hangs over the back. There is a piece of fabric dangling down from the bottom of the mask. Ears are attached to the top of the head and are decorated with ovoids, U and split U shapes. The mask is painted black, grey, red and white with Northwest Coast stylized designs.

White garment with embroidery. The garment has a rectangular shape with no sleeves and open sides. The neck is squared and edged with blue thread. The upper front and back have a dense panel with a multicoloured diamond pattern in rows. Down the centre are blue, pink, green and yellow stripes. The sides have pink stripes. The bottom edge is unfinished and uneven. The inside is unlined.

Embroidered TextileEdz1471

Plain white cloth with black embroidery. Central motif shows two overlappng diamond shapes with Chinese character between them. One has a large flower and two smaller motifs, the other has flowers and a butterfly. Between each at top or bottom is potted fruiting plant. Four phoenixes surround both diamonds. In each corner are: a lion, an ox, a phoenix, and a person. Each end is hemmed and embroidered with geometric design.

Ecru blouse with embroidery. The blouse has square neckline, short sleeves and full lower hem. Bordering the neckline are four squares across the front, four on the back and one and a half on the sides. The squares have a large diamond motif with radiating lines in orange, yellow, green, blue and purple on red ground. There is red stitching around the sleeves. The inside is unlined.

The sleeves have upper and lower bands of small floral motifs. In the centre sleeve is a large panel with bird and vase motifs around a square with centre floral motif in pink, red, white and green. Panel with prominant cloud motif on blue background. Also includes four gold dragons, two large and two small at opposite positions on the panel, and small dragon encircled at centre. Motifs also include animals, waves and swastika symbols. Diagonal bands of colour under waves, at opposite ends of panel. Blue and white floral border. Backed with muslin that has faded and inconsistant stripes of blue dye.
