Cantonese Opera HatN1.803

The folded hat is black and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a black centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are red and pink peonies with green leaves and yellow swirls. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has pink and orange peonies. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. In the centre of the flap is a large pink, green, orange and red peony. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs, orange and pink peonies with green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Embroidered on the centre panel is a red and orange lotus and a multicoloured butterfly. Inside of both side folds are orange, green and red peonies surrounded by gold swirls. The rounded top piece has a large purple, green and yellow bat. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large bat motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. In the centre of the flap is a large red flower. Surrounding the flower is a circle of gold scroll designs, purple peonies with green leaves and orange and red flowers with green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Black, red and yellow material sewn into a skirt-like tube, covered in beading; geometric beaded patterns and stylized figures in yellow, black, red, green and blue. Short beaded fringe along the bottom. Round metal sequin-like beads spaced along the bottom edge. Vertical strip of material and beading down the garment's centre, lined with flat, white beads on either side and having a longer fringe with pom-poms at the bottom.

A woman's pleated full wrap-around red skirt. Gathered onto a waistband. Skirt has three horizontal rows of hand embroidered multi-coloured floral motifs consisting of white flowers that have purple centres with green, purple, and yellow leaves. Waist band trimmed with embroidered ribbon having a main design consisting of yellow and blue flowers with mint green leaves, braid, glass beads, and metal sequins. Black and gold-coloured braid attached at each end of the waist band. Lined and stiffened with starched cotton gauze.

A woman's white half-slip. Gathered at the waist by an elastic in casing. Wide band of white eyelet lacing is attached with widely spaced pleats. Lacing design from top to bottom is consisting of the following horizontal rows: holes in the formation of a zig zag, upward pointing tulip-like flowers in profile, twelve-petalled flowers within vertically elongated octagons, downward pointing tulip-like flowers in profile, and holes in the formation of a zig zag. Scalloped hemline. Tuck at hipline for lengthening.

Table Mat1712/36

A machine made rectangular cloth piece. Central panel has a main design consisting of a white-on-white design within the weave of the cloth of a central rose, surrounded by two thin oval bands. A design of roses and other flowers (with blue bells ?) fills the space between the second oval band and a rectangular band to which a bouquet of flowers is tied with a bow at each corner of the rectangular band. This is surrounded by a row of square dots. Bordered by a row of holes.
