Carrying ClothSf809

A complete square cloth of white cotton with four corner ornaments, a fringed border and tassels on each corner. Two red brocade corner ornaments have yellow edgings which are wrapped and brocaded. Two yellow corner ornaments have red edgings. Two tassels are three-part, alternating red and white. Two tassels, which may be fragmentary, are single white ones. S-spun singles (cotton); z-spun singles (alpaca); z-spun, two plied s cotton and alpaca yarns.

Male figure (part a), with head (part b) and pointed rod (part c) with circular metal disk around centre: face painted yellow, yellow ears, red lips, four gold teeth exposed. Gold eyeballs with black pupils looking upwards, black eyebrows each forming long arches. Black caste mark, black beauty mark on right above corner of mouth. Top of head is flat; wears gold crown, headdress of green, red, black, gold, and yellow rises up at the back to an open-mouthed creature with gold lolling tongue: has jagged teeth. Green hair shows beneath headdress. Long brown and black batik skirt, open at the back; black long-sleeved jacket, decorated front, tattered green and pink braid attached to each sleeve. Multicoloured shoulder ornaments (epaulettes), woven Mandarin-style collar. Wide blue band around waist; black, white, blue, and gold plastic belt. Smaller pink belt underneath. Gold painted hands.

Rod PuppetIb304 a-d

Three-dimensional female humanoid puppet: head (part c) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part d) with a long shaft passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure's right arm is broken at the hand where the control rod attaches (part b). The figure has a flower motif on each breast underneath a black fabric bib decorated with gold-coloured beads and coloured sequins. The bib has a shiny bright green mandarin-style collar decorated with braid and silver sequins. Forward-bending white face and neck, small straight nose, slit-shaped eyes, red lower lip, red caste mark, beaumark on right above corner of mouth, ears. Top of head is flat, straight black hair. Gold body and arms; crown of gold, green and red. Multicoloured band around waist, attached to body with blue tack on front, red and blue tacks on back. Long batik skirt, in beige, light brown and grey-blue.

The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. The figure's face is dark red with black and white spots. Mouth open exposing one tooth at front of mouth; long upper lip. Nose, eyes small; black pupils. Head painted dark red; lump at back of head. Dark multi-coloured fabric skull cap on head. Arms long and dangling; hands large, and positioned at right angles to wrists. Close-fitting jacket with a rust-coloured, knit torso, a high collar, and short sleeves of patterned cotton. Beige belt around waist. Plaid skirt in grey and brown with purple and off-white stripes.

The textile is rectangular and striped with a string fringe. The main panel is a single, complete loom width of warp-striped cotton striped in light and medium shades of brown with solid brown camelid bands along each long side. Sewn onto each brown band is a band of red and yellow circles. The fringe at both ends is made of warp loops and secured by two rows of countered weft twining. Z-spun, two plied, s yarns, sewn.

A spherical metal bell with a wide split in the bottom. One half has the raised features of a human face, the other half is blank. Opposite the split is a slender shank surmounted by a loop. Smaller loops flank it. Fragments of red alpaca yarn and off-white cotton yarn remain tied through the loop.

Two convex metal circles, one above the other, are connected by a folded strap of the same metal. A hole in the fold of the strap secures a handspun cotton yarn on which nineteen stone and shell beads are strung. The beads vary in size and shape. The colour range includes blue-green, yellow and red-purple. The metal object has traces of red pigment over the entire surface, inside and out.

Black ceramic stylized bird; rounded back, pointed tail and folded wings which meet the end of the beak that rests on the breast. The eyes are round and recessed; beak and wings have incised liner detailing. One hole under the tail, below the beak; another hole between neck and beak containing remnants of brown fibre twine.

Skirt, girl's, made of woven black wool fabric with red tape at the pleated waist. The red fabric extends at the ends as ties. The bottom edge is finished with the same tape. The centre and bottom of the skirt are each decorated with a horizontal band of embroidered floral and zigzag design in red, blue, yellow, green and white. Between these two coloured bands is a thinner band of white embroidery.
