The item search helps you look through the thousands of items on the RRN and find exactly what you’re after. We’ve split the search into two parts, Results, and Search Filters. You’re in the results section right now. You can still perform “Quick searches” from the menu bar, but if you’re new to the RRN, click the Search tab above and use the exploratory search.

Staff made of thick, stiff strands of dried grass, wrapped with raffia in an open weave to make up the handle. From the bottom protrudes a tuft of raffia, wrapped with a band of woven white fabric and grey plastic twine. Two circular patches of raffia are attached close to the base, topped with cowrie shells arranged in a flower motif. The top of the staff is covered in unbleached cotton, edged with two kinds of braided synthetic banding. Attached to the cotton are three small gourd rattles, also wrapped in open raffia weaving, each with a single cowrie shell and plastic bead decoration. Three lines of cowrie shells are glued to the cotton between the gourds.
Costume skirt made of long, plain strips of raffia hanging from a thin cotton waistband.
Pearly queen costume cravat. Four wide layers of overlapping cream coloured lace with a teardrop motif and scalloped edge are attached to an oblong piece of white fabric backing. The cravat is attached around the wearer’s neck by a plain white fabric collar with a velcro closure at back.

Bone dagger. The body of the dagger is formed from a cassowary leg bone, partially cut to expose the hollow interior and shaped into a fine point. The head of the bone is wrapped with a woven plant fibre casing, continuing into five thin strands of woven fibre. These each attach to two groups of blue seeds attached to short grey and long, fine black feathers. The woven casing around the thick end of the dagger has three painted bands of orange pigment. At the bottom point is a small incised cut running in a band across the bone. The head of the bone is red, with the remainder of bone yellow-brown to brown.
Bone dagger. The body of the dagger is made from a bone that has been shaved away on one half to reveal the hollow interior of the bone. The surface of the bone is covered in marks and is stained with dirt. A faint carved mark appears on the underside of the dagger. The midsection of the piece is circumscribed with a thin, black, carved ring. The head of the bone is wrapped in a thickly woven plant fibre casing. This woven casing has seven strands coming off of it which are decorated with two sets of two blue or white seeds each and sets of two black beads connected to bundles of brown and black feathers. The tops of these seven bundles are wound with the same strands of natural fibre, and some of the strands extend past the length of the black feathers.
Bone dagger. The body of the dagger is made from a bone that has been shaved away on one half to reveal the hollow interior. The surface is covered in marks and is stained with dirt. The tip has been broken off. The head of the bone is wrapped in a woven plant fibre casing. This casing has ten strands coming off of it, each of which is decorated with blue and red seeds and black beads, culminating in bundles of brown and black feathers. The tops of these bundles are wound with the same strands of natural fibre. The casing around the head of the bone is otherwise undecorated aside from a single string of fibre that forms a large loop extending upwards from the casing.
Wooden ceremonial paddle. The paddle consists of a forked, elliptical-shaped end with two small, inward facing notches, an intricately carved wooden middle section which extends out from the neck of the paddle in a rectangular shape, and a top section consisting of woven fibres covering the wooden neck and attached strings of multi-coloured seeds and various feathers. The seeds are grey-blue, white and red-grey in colour and are strung along one edge of the woven fibre casing, forming small loops from which the ends of the white and brown feathers are attached. The mid-section of the paddle is indicative of a paddle blade, with eight cuts through the wood in half moon shapes and incised with v-shaped patterns, winding lines and curled abstract motifs. Extending in either direction from the centre are incised abstract shapes generally following an elaborate v-shaped pattern. The forked end of the paddle is carved in the shape of an elongated half oval and is undecorated.
Powder horn. The hollow, curved horn is open at its small end. The wide end is closed off with a round wooden stopper, held in place with 8 evenly spaced round-headed nails bored through the horn. A large nail emerges from the centre of the end, around which is knotted a twisted cotton cord that is tied to a thin string and wrapped around the narrow end of the horn between two carved rings. There is a large light red contact stain on one side of the horn and part of the string.
Plain wooden rattle. The rattle’s head is made of two rounded, oblong pieces of deeply concave wood, hollowed on the inside, attached to each other on both long edges by strands of plant fibre (cedar root?), threaded through holes bored in the wood. The head is undecorated. Inside are noisemakers, possibly seeds. The handle is long, thin, and cylindrical, made of two similarly sized and shaped pieces of wood carved to fit together, hollow on the inside and held together by three metal nails. A small tuft of cotton thread is attached around the bottom nail on both sides. A decorative jog has been created in the connection point between the two pieces of wood on both sides of the handle.
