Shoes984/7 a-b

Pair of women’s shoes made of smooth black leather, lined with dark brown leather. The shoes have low sides but have a rounded extension up over the heel. The toe area is curved upwards and comes to a point. There is a central vertical seam closing the toe area, and a vertical seam at the heel, both with stitches concealed on the inside. The shoes are open along almost their entire length except for a small area over the toes. The opening is finished with narrow piping of the same material. The uppers are stitched to the soles with small even stitches of heavy thread. The rigid soles are formed of multiple layers of leather and taper in slightly except at the heel, which is slightly raised. The soles are covered with rows of iron hobnails except for the area under the arch.

Model Totem Pole2603/6

Carved and painted model totem pole with mask, frog and eagle figures. All figures have unusually large wide eyes. The base is a longitudinally cut piece of bone. The back of the pole is flat and uncarved.

Knife2548/2 a-b

Part a is a steel knife with a black coloured cow horn handle. Handle has two sets of four metal bands alternating with three black coloured bands. On the bottom of the knife handle there is a circular piece of metal with two black circle outlines by the edge of the metal circle. Part b is a camel skin sheath that is sewn up one side (with sinew?). Near the opening, on either side of the stitching there are two flaps of extra skin. On the tip there is a cylindrical wrap of skin. There are burnt geometric and linear designs on both sides and top of the sheath.

Necklace2596/4

Finely polished cow bone necklace strung on plastic filament (fishing line?). Small cylinder-shaped bone beads alternate with elongated rectangular bone pieces which curve to a point (like skis); ends of necklace have areas of just small beads. Necklace has metal hook clasp at ends.

Ceremonial shield made of cowhide with an overall oval shape. The fur on the cowhide is a mottled light grey-brown at the centre with dark brown at both ends. Two pieces of hide have been woven through slits made in the hide, and there is a wooden stick attached at the back through hide straps.

Pair of rigid black shoes made of smooth-surfaced heavy, stiff leather dyed black with unfinished natural leather soles and small heels nailed on with iron nails. One iron cleat is attached at toe and one at the heel. Row of hand-stitching around outer edge of sole. Shoes are low at sides, higher at back and have upturned toes with a centre seam. Piping in the same colour as the outside around the upper edge. Inside of shoes is brown and part b has a brown insole, while the other is black with the stitching showing.

Hide sandals (part a-b) with brown straps made of twisted sheep skin. The soles are made of cow hide with black fur on the topside. On each sandal the strap is tied on the bottom of the sole in the toe area. The strap is then looped through two holes in the sides and extends back to fit over the heel.

Brown bottle-shaped container (part a) with skin lid (part b). Skin is stretched across base of wooden container. Near the centre of the container, the skin sections off into five vertically positioned thin strips of skin, creating five panels of exposed wood with dark areas in the centre. The top of the strips are connected by a horizontally positioned strip of skin that is secured by a skin tie. Container is capped with a skin lid (part b) that has a long skin strap that hangs to the side of the container.
