Hat2902/88

Small round black hat with colourful striped applique covering the front side. Domed metal ornaments stitched with purple thread form three vertical lines at the top of the hat. The two outside lines have a silver bell hanging from them and the centre line has a round silver coin hanging from it with embossed characters and grass (?) design. Below are two vertical lines of white beads with two metal domes, two cowrie shells, and one metal piece in between. Underneath are three flowers composed of white tube-shaped beads for petals and silver domes for the centres. A row of small white round beads lines the bottom edge of the hat. Three strands of white beads with alternating brown bean-shaped beads hang from either side of the hat, forming a loop under the wearer's chin. The top of the hat also features these loops of beads with alternating brown flat beads, which hang down the back of the hat. The top of the hat is covered in purple-pink feathers.

Sash2902/130

Long thin rectangular black sash with seam in centre and black fringe tassles at each end. Either end has thin embroidered multi-coloured lines and then wider multi-coloured striped applique bands. Attached to the applique is a cowrie shell and two strings of white beads with two gold beads at the ends. Green and pink tassles hang from the ends of these beaded strings. One end also has two round beads attached to the black fringe, one clear and one brown. This end also has a blue strip of fabric tied to the tassle.

Vest2902/108

Square dark blue vest with open front and slit sleeves. Collar has stitched lines in white, pink and green with embroidered tassle designs on the bottom. The right side of vest has a small square applique slightly darker than the rest of the vest. Bottom of vest has six thin horizontal lines of colourful embroidery. Sleeves have red and blue trim, and sides of vest are embellished with four shells on either side. Back of vest has a white appliqued band along the centre with green and pink embroidery. Above the band is a flag(?) composed of white, red, and yellow-orange. Below the band are eight thin horizontal lines of muti-coloured embroidery, embellished with three vertical columns of white buttons with pink stitching.

Gable Mask2772/2

Heavy black wood gable mask with only the lower half of the back carved out. Tufts of curly black hair and shells are inset into mounds of black clay(?) at the top of the head, eyebrows, eyes, mouth and sides of the nose. The nose is pierced with a long stick and each ear has twisted brown grass rope earrings knotted into two holes.

Carved dark wood figure, painted with yellow, reddish orange, grayish white and brown pigments, with elongated mask-like face that has spiral shell eyes and wild pig teeth with hanging feathers protruding from its nostrils and spines down its back. On top of the head is an elaborate pointed headdress with mask at front and back, on the shoulders are painted masks, and around the face is a fringe of cassowary feathers imbedded, along with an assortment of small shells, into a base of brown clay. Climbing up the figure's legs from the mounded base with decorative bands of circles is a small alligator.

Model House2724/1 a-c

Rectangular model village spirit house (haus tamburan) on 14 dark brown carved stilts has a basketry and clay mask with Cowrie shell eyes hanging at each end and a fringe of reddish grass along the bottom. Woven grass rope roof and walls with two small square openings in each are supported by an inner bamboo frame and floor boards. Wood house post finials carved in the shape of birds sit atop the roof peaks at each end; (b) stands upright with engraved markings on chest and light brown open wings while the darker (c) bends forward and looks down, scalloped wings with dark brown markings pointing upwards.

Wooden boar-fish carving with painted designs. The fish-like body (a) has fins and a tail. It is painted with large orange, yellow circles surrounded by white dots on black ground. The pig-like head has an upturned snout stuck through with a pole decorated with feathers (b,c), and pointed tusks. It is painted with orange, white designs on yellow ground. There are three kinds of shells arranged from the tip of the snout, down the spine to the tail. There is a large ornate shell and a line of black feathers on the forehead.

Ancestor Figure2751/1

Tall wood carving of an ancestor figure standing on a mounded base. Covered with carved body tattoos, a mask-like face on each shoulder, a protruding belly, and large genitalia hanging out from behind a bark loin cloth attached to a grass belt, the figure wears an elaborate mask painted in white, red and black pigments. The mask has large cowrie shell eyes, boar tusks sticking out of the nostrils, elaborate earrings, a feather headdress plus fringe of feathers, and is surrounded with a clay border into which are embedded numerous tiny shells.
