Temple cloth. Textile is block printed and dyed. Background colour is pale purple-pink, with dense designs in deep black. At centre is a buffalo with the torso and head of a male, holding in one hand a curved sword and a floral decal in the other. Above his back is the many-armed goddess Durga. Around this central image are repeating motifs showing fish, birds, musicians, dancers, hunters with bows, and women carrying water jugs on their heads. Edges have lines of triangles, floral motifs, and chevrons.

Basket3204/18

Open-mouthed basket, with long, stiff, looped handle. Exterior is woven in narrow strips, with wider strips for the interior lining along with four extra large strips on bottom. Interior and exterior are sewn together with stitching below rim and across bottom. Colours used on exterior are dark purple-blue, light purple, pink, light green and natural. The words Pitcairn Island are woven into the side of the basket.

Basket3204/12 a-b

Birchbark basket (part a) with decorated lid (part b). Basket is round with straight sides, base and rim separate pieces of bark that have been stitched on with root ties. A scalloped bark ring has been similarly stitched on, beneath the root-wrapped lip. Lid construction is similar to basket, with a strip of birch for rim and a top piece stitched on with root. Lid design is a flower pattern in an ‘x’ shape made from dyed root. Underside of lid has a birch lining, covering the bottom root stitches.

Large, low-sided basket. Round woven basket has a flat base, from which rises a short wall that flares outward slightly toward the rim. Sides are decorated with two lines of checked patterning in rust and dark brown colours, with a similar pattern along the bottom that also includes rings in dark brown and light yellow-brown.

Round basket with lid. Small basket has a recessed base from which rises the short, straight wall. Weave is fine, with two lines of imbricated design around midpoint, rectangles each with an interior panel, in colours of purple, blue and light green- likely faded. The lid fits over the mouth of the basket and is concave at centre with a convex finial. Designs similar to those on the basket encircle the finial.

Shawl3264/2

Long woven garment decorated in a pattern of horizontal stripes, in colours of green, yellow, orange, blue and purple. Full colour stripes alternate with stripes incorporating black zig zags. At each end of the shawl hangs a dense fringe of tassels created from the ends of the shawl fibres.
