Robe3522/102

Black men's robe made of a rectangular piece of fabric, folded in half at the shoulder; long slit neck opening in the centre. White stripes, in groups of three or single, decorate robe overall. Triangular shaped pocket attached below neck opening, extending onto left side of chest. Pocket has an intricate knot, heart, "X" shape, and plain and dotted horizontal lines embroidered across it. Triangle-like paper patch stitched to back of neckline; "X" shape embroidered across centre. Embroidery on patch visible on back of robe. All embroidery done in dark yellow. Sides are hemmed, top and bottom edges are unfinished.

Noomuthl Mask3533/1

Carved wooden face mask with a large nose protruding out from the centre. Painted mainly in black and blue, with large red nostrils and a pattern of red dashes at both upper sides. Round open eyes and an open slit at the mouth. Chin unpainted. Braided cedar bark rope attached all around the edges; the braid meets at the top and is bound by a cotton twine. Half of the bark has been dyed red. Above the bound area the cedar bark sticks out over the forehead, as a loose bundle. Inside unpainted. Artist initials carved into wood (T inside the A). (Metal eye hook and plastic tied across back for hanging.)

Mud Cloth3530/4

Brown cloth composed of thirteen strips of hand woven textile, stitched together along the long edges; yellow-brown, black and white motifs throughout. Outer edges of cloth have a wide border consisting of diamonds inside squares. Diamonds are filled with semi-circles and there are dots along each side of the diamonds. Large rectangle in centre of mud cloth with a wide border consisting of connected triangles, forming star-like shapes, divided by plain and dotted lines. Rows of concentric diamonds frame central band of repeating triangles, diamonds, semi-circles and dot designs in middle of rectangle. Back of cloth is undecorated.

Funeral Cloth3530/3

Brown cloth composed of eight strips of fabric; six span the length of the cloth, two are shorter and make up one row. Strips are stitched together along the long edges and decorated with kente embroidery; done in yellow with alternating green, black and red stripes. Adinkra symbols stamped throughout; stamps consist of alternating blocks of swirls, vertical lines, columns of hourglass-like shapes, concentric circles, and diamonds in a line grid; stamps done in dark metallic grey. Back of cloth is undecorated.

Red checkered man's wrap with finished ends; top and bottom are unfinished. The checkered squares are formed with four dark blue and four white lines on each side. Additional white horizontal and vertical lines throughout, forming crosses inside each square.

White gauze scarf with embroidered borders along either side. Borders are red and trimmed with white bands; bands decorated with black triangles. Three black patterned bands run along length of border. Two outer bands are identical and have four decorative gold stripes. In between stripes are gold and red dashes. Central band has two gold stripes through it, with white dashes in between. White twisted fringe on either end of scarf.

Bag3531/5

Square cotton bag with a top opening. Bag is blue and decorated with rows of dots and slashes in between two alternating bands; all designs done in white. The first band design consists of alternating white and blue columns with connected diamonds inside them. A wide white line, filled with blue dots and slashes, runs through the centre of the band. The second band design is trimmed with small white squares filled with blue dots. The design consists of alternating squares with dots, diamonds and diagonal lines inside them. Long fabric handle is attached to left side and tied to a dark blue loop on the other; handle ends in a thick braid. Handle is patterned with alternating rows of knots and ovals; handle is blue, designs done in white.

Long red pants with alternating wide white and thin blue stripe design. White stripes are trimmed on either side with blue, black, green, orange, and dark purple; blue stripes trimmed on either side with black, orange, and purple. Small pleats along front, close to waistline. Pants secure at the waist with a zipper and hook and bar closure. They have seven belt loops and traditional five pockets.

Rectangular textile printed with the Swaziland flag on a blue background. The main flag design consists of a black and white Nguni shield, covering two spears and a staff decorated with red feather tassels. The shield motif is repeated all around the outer edge in black, white and red. The flag area is bordered by a dark gold rectangular band; inside is a wide red horizontal band bordered by two thin gold bands above and below, then two blue bands above and below. Underneath the shield is a white band with "SWAZILAND" printed in black text. Either end is finished; the bottom and top edges are trimmed in black.

Hat3531/4 a-b

Woven palm leaf hat, fedora-style (part a), with a decorative belt (part b). Hat has a moderately wide brim and crown with a pinched front and back. There are three holes on each side, between the pinched sections, lined with metal. A green plastic ribbon wraps around the base. It has an alternating square motif, consisting of solid green squares and checkered ones with floral motifs in the centre. Separate red leather belt rests around hat base, covering the ribbon. Belt is decorated with columns of holes, lined with metal, along its length; entire belt wrapped in a dark blue wool.
