Pipe BagD2.86

Very long skin bag with quill wrapping. Plain along the top with a red border that has red raffia. Two quill designs on the bottom with long strips of hide for the fringe as well as tin cones with red raffia within along one side. One side of the upper portion has a design that consists of a purple- and yellow- outlined bow-tie shape with an hour glass shape along the middle on a red background. The other side of the upper portion has a design that consists of four quadrants of red, purple, and white squares. The lower portion has a design on both sides that consists of a pair of vertical orange and black rectangles on a dark red background.

Multi-coloured, embroidered hat, or skull cap. The crown is slightly conical in shape and is mounted on a straight band. Dense stitchery covers the entire surface, with linear, diagonal, geometric forms arranged in interlocking diamond shapes. The stitchery is worked on several layers of wool and cotton textiles, including a layer of cheese cloth which provides a grid upon which the designs have been worked. Colours used are purple, red, dark yellow, white, green, blue, orange and tan.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.675 b

The folded hat is pink and blue, rectangular and decorated with appliqué and metal-mirrored discs. The hat flares at the top, narrows at the base and folds inwards on both sides. On the front the upper part is blue, the lower part is pink. One the blue part there is a large white circle with an embroidered bird in the centre. Surrounding the circle are tuffs of white rabbit fur. Around the circle are motifs in silver thread. Inside the folded sides are large white circles with goldfish surrounded with tuffs of white rabbit fur. On the back are motifs in silver thread on a pink background. Along the bottom of the hat is a silver border with brass discs, edged with purple with traces of gold. Covering the entire surface of the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two ecru ties are attached.

Headdress334/1

The headdress, or headband, consists of two narrow orange pieces of fabric attached and decorated with metal discs and beads with a long braided tassel. One piece of fabric is longer than the other; the shorter piece has a red and pink embroidered panel in the centre. The pieces are attached in the centre. Along the outside edges of the larger piece thin metal discs are sewn. Smaller metal discs are sewn all over the shorter piece. Two strands of orange and yellow beads extend from the centre of the headdress, one in either direction. String and fabric loops and one red button extend from the centre piece. Attached to one of the string loops is a black braided tassel that branches into two brown and one orange tassels. The tassels are accented with orange and brown wrapped thread and black and white beadwork.

Brown woven hanten (袢纏, also written as 半天, 袢天, 半纏) made of sakiori (裂織) textile. The woven fabric consists of brown, blue, purple and red pieces. There is a wide blue band around the neck and partway down the centre opening. The opening and sleeve edges are edged with blue trim. The sleeves are slightly tapered. The inside is unlined.

Dark blue vest with a patterned upper section. The pattern is thin gold and white lines forming a checkered design. The pattern is used on the shoulders and upper back. Around the neck and partway down the centre opening is a wide band with pairs of gold stripes on a dark blue ground. The upper inside of the vest is lined with fabric, thick gold stripes on black ground.

The hat is green and rectangular, decorated with silver applique and metal-mirrored discs. The upper sides of the hat are indented and edged with gold fabric. The hat is decorated with silver designs, some outlined in pink. Also covering the hat are metal discs with mirrored centres. The bottom of the hat has a white border with brassl discs and is edged with purple. There are two white ties knotted together. The back of the hat has a wire design on back and is stiffened with cardboard. The front has a narrow segment that folds out when the hat is worn. In the centre of the segment is a white circle with a red border surrounded by white fur. In the centre of the circle is an applique blue and pink bird with green leaves. On either side of the centre circle there are similar bird circles, not visible when the narrow segment lies flat.

Cylindrical, wrapped twined, pattern basket (a) with slightly scalloped rim. Woven around a plastic honey container (b). Walls decorated with many patterns: two swimming deer, whale attached to canoe containing two persons, whale eating boat, whale, three triangular trees, flower and leaves, two ducks, five sitting birds, ten flying birds, two wolf or serpent headdress representations, three thunderbirds, one bird with wings over yellow head, one dark blue and red-purple bird. Band of dark blue and green at top and bottom of basket. Base has square of cedar bark checker work weaving at centre surrounded by three rows of plain twining, wrapped twining completes base.
