Cantonese Opera Rank BadgeN1.816 a-b

Two square badges (part a-b) with embroidered designs. The design has two large lotus in pink and turquoise on black ground, above wave and mountain motifs in gold, pink, orange and green. The badges are edged with tin reflectors and white rabbit fur. The back lining is white cotton with eight metal snap closures around the edges. There is a purple stamp, black ink and pencil on the back of each badge.

Cantonese Opera HatN1.810

The folded hat is brown and rectangular with a rounded top piece, a back flap and embroidered motifs. The hat has a brown centre panel which folds inwards on both sides. Embroidered on the centre panel are red peonies. These designs are repeated on the inside of both side folds. The rounded top piece has a large embroidered dragon motif in green with gold, purple and red. Hanging down from the top piece on either side of the centre panel is a red streamer. On the back, the flap mimics the rounded top piece and extends down past the bottom of the folded centre panel, flaring out at the bottom. The large dragon motif is repeated on the top piece of the back flap. Beneath the dragon and in the centre of the flap is a large red ‘ji’ symbol (luck). Surrounding the symbol is a circle of purple peonies, yellow scroll designs and green leaves. On the inside of the hat is ecru lining, stiffened with cardboard. Two blue and ecru ties are attached.

Ikat Textile1647/2

Rectangular woven ikat fabric; predominantly shiny, rich purple and crimson hues. All-over geometric patterning with diamond-shaped motifs in red, orange-yellow, and blue and a dark purple ground. Bands of red along the lengthwise edges. Four thick stripes alternating with three thin bands of patterning at either end.

Multicoloured cotton skirt with an open back and a tie closure at the waistband. Skirt is made from two identical panels, overlapping at centre front, attached to a wide, unbleached cotton waistband; panels are made from strips of blue, white, green, purple, red, and yellow fabric, separated by gold metallic braid-like ribbon.

Mask (a) made from two separate pieces of wood and joined at centre at an angle with a triangular support at the top. The face is painted with heavy black eyebrows that have arched blue design elements above them, light blue around the eyes, red on the nostrils and lips, a black moustache, a red scalloped line design and a black line curving from the nostrils to the chin, and a blue scalloped design under the mouth. The remainder of the face is painted white. A tuft of feathers affixed to a tapering wooden stick with blue string and off-white adhesive fabric tape (b) fits into a hole at the top of the mask. A pencilled in design is visible on the cheeks.

Three-quarter length leggings with a drawstring waist and a multicoloured beaded fringe with pom-poms around the hemlines. The front and back of the leggings are largely covered with brightly coloured satin-like strips of fabric sewn into a chevron pattern. Small, flat metal heart-shapes are sewn decoratively onto the front and back of the leggings.

Tapering swamp grass basket (part a) with a lid (part b). Base has a red-brown checkerwork centre with wicker weave and plain twined weave on edges. Sides are wrapped twined weave. The main design of the basket (part a) consists of three sets of bands with the central cover band in blue and purple with yellow in a zig zag pattern, a top band of pink-red outlined with blue-green, and a bottom band of pink-red outlined with purple. The lid (part b) has a three part rotational design in pink-red and purple.
