Bag3448/9

Small square folded bag with woven strap, tied at apex. The edging on three sides is neon pink. The central design is composed of repeating eight-petal lilac purple flowers and an S-shape pattern in yellow and dark pink, on a green background. Strap is dark pink and dark blue with a horizontal band of repeating S-shapes in yellow; folded in half along length; ends stitched to upper corners of bag. There are two snap closures inside the bag.

Small square folded bag with woven strap, tied off-centre from apex. A large neon yellow tassel is attached to each lower corner. The edging on three sides is neon yellow. The central design is composed of repeating star pattern in neon yellow, dark green, and neon pink. Strap is yellow with a pink zigzag flanked by two bands of pink running lengthwise; folded in half along length; ends stitched to upper corners of bag.

Basketry3454/1 a-b

Basketry covered bottle (part a) with faded design of a whale and whalers in a boat around middle. Above and below the whaling scene is a single red line with half circles repeating through it. There are bands of faded black with repeating red dashes through the centre. On the shoulder of the bottle is an extremely faded black design. The base has various sizes of plant fibres used, and an oval design in bright yellow, outlined in black. Removable basketry lid (part b) has two red dotted lines around the side and a red circle on the top with a faded black spiral design within.

Textile3448/27

Long, thin woven textile that is heavily embroidered on one side. Both short edges have twisted fringe. At centre, a wide band of red embroidered with beige X designs is flanked by two smaller bands of dark blue. On either side, are dark blue-grey panels each with a row of large embroidered cat-like and double X motifs. Along both sides is a smaller dark grey central panel with repeating embroidered X pattern, with even smaller dark grey panels of embroidered beige zigzags with dots within the spaces. These three small panels are divided by thin bands of solid red flanked by bands of solid dark blue.

Rectangular woven grass green shawl with six rows of embroidered figures, animals, birds, and maize in pastel colours. There are horizontal bands embroidered between each row, with exception to the top two. Each band is composed of stripes of pastels colours. The top short edge of the textile has a short fringe, while the bottom short edge has long fringe.

Small rectangular woven brown textile with embroidered designs. In the centre panel are rectilinear designs in various bright colours, outlined in thick black, all connected by diagonal lines. Filling the space between those designs are thin wavy black lines. Both ends have embroidered lines in various colours with one large band - on one end orange on grey zigzags, and the other end has repeating pink flowers and green foliage. One end is finished in a green stitch, and the other in black stitch.

Wall Hanging3457/1

A white woven wall hanging with knotted loops along the upper edge and long fringe along the lower. Fringe and loops are beige. Rows of designs spaced across entire surface. From top to bottom, the designs are: dark brown band with alternating white and light beige diamonds through the centre, vertical zigzags, plain olive green band, plain peach line, row of light beige crosses with dark brown centres, plain peach line, plain dark brown line, row of light beige crosses with dark brown centres, thick plain dark brown line. The zigzag motif is in the largest design. Central zigzag is white and is mirrored on either side by lines done in light beige, olive green, peach and dark brown. Bottom of blanket is gently curved.

Multi-coloured, embroidered, pillbox style cap. Three bands of designs along the sides. Top and bottom bands are black with crosshatching designs overtop. Small section of diagonal lines at front of bands. Middle band made up of checkerboard pattern broken up by two small sections with separate designs. Small square section towards front of cap has a bird-like figure inside it. Figure done in neon green, background is neon blue. To right of square is a small rectangular section with an abstract design inside it. Design done in blue-grey, orange and white. Top of cap has beige centre with a small knob. Vertical bands with assortment of crosshatching, diagonal lines and triangle designs overtop surround beige centre. Colours used for all design elements are: green, yellow, blue-grey, dark red, neon blue, neon green, orange, white, black and red. Interior of cap lined with light blue cotton.

Skirt3425/3 a-b

Skirt or piupiu composed of strands of alternating scraped and not scraped flax leaves forming a horizontal striped pattern where the not scraped leaves are a light yellow colour, and the scraped segments are a dark brown colour. Spelled out using dark sections is "AOTEAROA". The leaves hang from a woven waistband made of grey-blue and orange braided fibre with long ties on each end, also braided. The initials B.T. are stitched onto the waistband in white. The piupiu storage bag (part b) is tube shaped with both ends open and able to be cinched. The top has lining tape creating a pocket, through which a grey and red-brown plaited fibre cord is drawn through. The other end has an elastic strap threaded through and tied off.
