Bag3425/8

Rectangular woven flax bag with geometric designs in brown and natural colour. Weaving has alternating vertical bands of colour, and double twisted sections with an X-like appearance. Around the sides and bottom edge are thick layers of fringe, alternating between sections of brown or natural. The top has two thin twisted handles with tassels.

Jacket3464/1

Handmade, indigo dyed jacket. The exterior is black, the interior is lined with dark blue cloth. Jacket has a front centre opening, with finely woven bands attached to either side. Bands have a central design of curved lines on a solid background, trimmed by plain and dotted lines. Designs are done in different shades of purple. Identically coloured bands are along the halfway point of the sleeves. Bands have alternating, diagonal rows of swastikas and meander-like designs. They are framed with straight lines and rhombuses. Sides of bands, closest to the cuffs, are trimmed with white and dark brown stitches. Identical stitching along shoulders. Back of jacket has a central panel of vertical stripes, done in shades of blue and brown. Overtop, below the neckline, is an additional decorative panel made of tin embroidery, done in meander-like designs. Panel has long strands of fringe along the bottom edge. Front of jacket has a patch on one side, and another piece is inset around the neck.

Hyena Mask3420/55

Mask carved from wood and painted. The animal face has a keyhole-like shape - a wide rounded top that narrows to a rectangular lower jaw. A large reddish-brown ridge extends over the back of the head, and carries down to the centre of the face, doubling as a nose. There are two small square cutout eye holes. The face is painted with black and white geometric designs of repeating triangles. Two large pointed ears extend out from the top of the head. Dark teal plant fibre hair is attached to the back.

Loom3447/1 a-e

Loom with a partially completed weaving tied to four bars (part a). Weaving attached to bars at the top and bottom with one bar, intertwined in the weaving, towards the bottom, and another attached to the back, towards the bottom. There are three removable swords (parts b-d) and one removable shuttle (part e) stored in the weaving, at the bottom. The attached bars are all made of bamboo. The shuttle (part e) and one of the swords (part c) are made of light yellow-brown wood, the other two swords (parts b and d) are dark brown. The shuttle has notched ends and is wrapped entirely in orange thread. The weaving on part a is orange and has rows of repeated designs across the entire surface. Row designs include: loose chevron pattern, tight chevron pattern, dotted squares, dotted lines, "X" design across length with squares in the negative space, and abstract "V" design across length with squares in the negative space. Designs done in indigo, red, yellow, black, green, dark blue, white and electric blue. Rest of weaving is incomplete and orange in colour, with loose strands of black and yellow throughout. Three metal rings attached to the top and bottom loom bars- one on the top, to the right of the weaving, and two on the bottom, on either side of the weaving.

Fragment of a mantle (shawl). Horizontal rows with designs inside of them, trimmed with patterned bands along their bottom edges, across entire surface. Overlaying, woven fringe tabs hanging from bands. The design elements along the left and right sides- the patterns, band and fringe- are dark brown and the design elements in the middle are red. Step pattern inside of the light brown horizontal rows, with wave motifs inside of them. Bands have two lines of light brown through them. The upper line has a wave motif through it, done in red, and the bottom line is plain.

Doll (a) representing a male figure carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. His face and hands are painted white with painted black hair, eyebrows, eyes, a drooping moustache and a chin beard. He wears a separate black paper hat (b) with a narrow brim and black silk ribbons that tie in a bow under his chin. A nail at the top of his head helps keep the hat in place. He wears a long sleeveless blue silk vest, gored and pleated under the arms, and fastened with a dingle button over a gored long-sleeved white silk coat fastening with ribbons tied in a single loop. Beneath this are an under-jacket with blue ribbons tied in a single-loop bow and under-trousers. His ankles are wrapped in white material, and he wears pointed shoes made of paper (?) covered with white cloth and painted with black linear and looped designs at the front and back.

Armband3376/2

Beaded armband composed of a horizontal band with thick layers of beaded fringe. The band is backed by a loose weave textile formed into three tube-like rows beaded in pale pink. A thick fringe of twisted dark blue fibres, each with two large sections of white, light blue, olive green beads, each colour separated by a single red bead. Sections separated with a space of fibre. Fibre knotted below the upper section and at the end.

Iridescent purple damask skirt with pleats and embroidery. Across the top is a wide pink cotton waistband with two loops. The purple damask is woven containing a cloud motif and the Eight Immortal symbols. On the edges of the skirt is a black border with a second border of floral motif on cream ground. On the pleats is a black border, some with an added floral trim. On the front and back panels are appliqué phoenix, bat, peony, vase, coin, fan and sword motifs in pink, red, gold, green and blue. The inside is lined with blue silk.

Table Runner3366/3

Long rectangular table runner with hand-embroidered maroon designs with navy blue, dark green and off-white details. The textile is divided into two mirrored sections by a 6 cm off-white band at the centre. On each side is a large square with concentric diamonds and geometric patterns within, bordered by rows of repeating geometric designs. The sides are unfinished, and each end is folded and sewn with a running stitch.

Embroidered square textile composed of two layers of fabric, light grey-green and off-white. Hand-embroidered designs decorate the grey-green face. The overall design is concentric squares. Every second square is similar with a background colour and small repeating design in another colour. The outer square is light green with red, then yellow with light pink and light blue, red with yellow, and then a small blue square with two star-like designs at centre. Every other square filled with a simple design of crossed-lines or diamonds.
