Rod PuppetIb409 a-c

Three-dimensional male humanoid puppet: large head (part b) fits into body with skirt (part a), and a control rod (part c) with a long shaft that passes through the body and fits into the neck of the figure's head. The body has jointed arms, each with a long controlling rod attached. Discoloured pink face positioned forward with bulging white eyes (red irises), red lips, and white teeth. Deeply furrowed brows and pyramidal nose. Large moustache, beard, and sideburns in black. Large headdress with gold diadem, black cap, and backwards facing Garuda Mungkur (short tongue) in green, red, and gold (sekar kluwih headdress), and single siyung jawi. Long gold and blue sumping. Gold neck and broad upper body; each arm has gold and red ornaments at bicep and wrist. Hands held flat and bent back at wrist. Red chest covering (only) with brown wavy trim, sequins and beads. Slight discolouration at collar. Long batik skirt with blue and purple detail.

Square shaped cotton shawl with hand sewn centre seam. At each end warp threads are knotted into a fringe with blue tassels attached. The design consists of three rows of multi-coloured double-faced brocade floral designs, separated by narrow bands of white single-faced brocade. Smaller floral bands are bounded by multi-coloured single face stripes at each end. The colours are pink, blue, red, green, yellow and purple on a green ground.

Red cotton blouse with embroidery and stripe pattern. The blouse has a square shape with a square neckline and no sleeves. Across the upper front and back are rows of embroidered diamond, animal and bird motifs in dark blue and purple on red ground. The embroidery is 2-faced supplementary weft. The stripe pattern has thin vertical stripes in green overall. Along the bottom hem is a twisted red fringe. The inside is unlined.

Skirt formed by two pieces of indigo-dyed cotton with two white stripes woven into the fabric every so often. The two pieces are joined together with a hand-embroidered multicoloured band (randas) insertion stitch seam in silk (?) and cotton or synthetic yarn. The ends are sewn together to form a tube.
