Chilkat RobeA17007

Chilkat style robe with woven designs and long fringe. The design is a three panel distributive. In the centre are two ancestor faces surrounded by a diving whale(?) motif. The side panels have ancestors faces in profile and a raven motif. The design is yellow, blue and black on natural ground. The two bottom corners have two rectangles with zigzags in black and yellow, associated with the identity of the weaver. There is long twisted fringe, on three sides, of mixed wool and cedar bark. On the top edge are two red flannel tabs with buttons and buttonholes for securing the robe around the neck.

Part a is a male doll and has a square head of folded off-white cloth with a skirt of white and pink cloth with a red, dark red and blue design over off-white cloth, the edges unfinished, and the skirt is bound with off-white string. Part b is a female doll with a round off-white head and a head scarf is made of white cotton with a floral pattern in pink, red, orange, green, and dark red. An off-white skirt or dress is tied just below the head with off-white string.

Triangle shaped coiled cedar root basketry lid decorated with imbrication. Three triangular shapes; two in black-dyed bark and grass, and one in red bark and grass along rim. Simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches), and watch-spring construction with extra splints added. Lid was previously attached to a basket (note three holes on one end.)
