Mask (a) with white face and small circular eyes, black hair and thick black eyebrows with red between them. There is a red design at the top centre of the forehead, and there are two red semicircles at the temples. The nostrils and lips are also red. A tuft of feathers attached to a wooden stick with blue string and off-white fabric tape (b) fits into a hole in the top of the mask.

Wooden frontlet attached to a head ring. Carved animal on frontlet depicts a beaver holding a stick in its mouth with both hands; painted pink, red and black; black square recesses surround the figure. Cloth head ring is attached to the back of the frontlet with buttons sewn around the outside.

Root-Digging BagA9366

Cylindrical basketry bag with leather sewn to rim. The rim also has leather ties attached on one side and a cotton string looped through the top of the basket on the opposite side. Cotton string is used for the wefts at the base, but a natural fibre is used for the main body of the basket and for the warps. Some of the warps are dyed a dark brown, but most of them are a yellowish brown colour. The body of the basket is completely decorated with designs, in dark brown, which are arranged in vertical columns. Some of them represent butterflies, quadraped animals (dogs ?), fish, and diamonds.

Cedar bark ring with a patterned trade cloth backing. Two ermine pelts along the upper rim, one with a horizontal band of cedar bark attached to the ring directly underneath it. Red yarn tied to the ermine pelts.

Carved wooden, crooked beak headdress, or mask. The beak has large red and white ovoid shaped nostrils with a red and white split u form on one side. Running from the brow is a large central black frill that protrudes outward and curves inwards to underneath the centre of the beak. The mouth is red, flat and protruding. The underside of the beak is black with white detailing; beak is nailed shut. The eyes are black, outlined in white and black on a green ovoid shaped ground; brow is black. There are black and white u-shaped feathers behind the eye. The inside of the mask is hollow with the exception of a thin ring of cedar used by the wearer. Attached at the top are small bundles of small stripes of cedar bark. Hanging from the back are long strips of bark. Lining the top, side and bottom is a twisted braid of cedar. The mask is painted black, white and red with Northwest Coast stylized forms.

Head RingA3600

Plaited cedar bark headband with twined coils of bark around the upper rim. Bundles of cedar bark strips are attached horizontally on either side of the headband. Band is lined with white and red checkered cotton cloth. Traces of red colouring in the cedar bark.
