Sandals3600/10 a-b

Pair of leather and rubber sandals with ankle and toe loop straps; straps threaded through cuts in insoles and nailed down. Soles are flat, rounded at toes and heels; “X”’s incised along edges of rounded sections of insoles. Straps are beige leather and have patterned bands across surfaces. Patterns consist of: triangles and zigzags, thin and thick stripes, checkered bands, and diagonal stripes. Designs done in dark blue, gold, white, dark red, and green.

Hat3600/8

Red dome-shaped hat with blue decorative band around sides. Pattern along band has central design of a vertical line with a square in the centre, framed on either side by alternating rectangles. Designs in rectangles alternate between stripes and vertical arrows with horizontal bars. Designs on band are done in red; interior of hat is unlined.

Cape in a shiny bright blue fabric with small silver ovoid pattern all over. Semi-circular with triangle where the cape is sewn at chest. Five ties or flaps that hang down from the bottom edge, and two more ties where it closes at chest. Interior lined with a light green.

Hair Tufting Textile3551/3

Framed caribou hair tufting of a floral design, on black velvet. Design is inside an oval cutout in the centre of a white cardboard mat. Motif consists of two orange and yellow Newfoundland pitcher plants with fallen petals; curved stems are dark green. Frame has raised edges and the inner edges, around the cardboard mat, are painted gold. Certificate, with maker and design information, is glued to back of wood frame.

Snowshoes3558/11 a-b

Pair of snowshoes (parts a-b) made of wooden frames with two curved crossbars. Babiche latticework between the frame and crossbars; latticework reinforced with plastic ties along frame. Shoes are rounded before tapering at the ends; shoes are flat. The frame consists of one piece of wood that has been bent into shape; ends are secured with nails below the front crossbar. Middle section of latticework is woven wider than front and back sections. Oval-shaped gaps in weave, underneath front crossbar, for feet; skin ties secured to sides of gaps. Decorative tufts of light blue, orange and dark purple wool are attached along the outer edges of frames, on front and back ends. Grooves cut into frame above wool decoration. The longer snowshoe (part b) has a knotted cord tied around the frame above the front crossbar, along the left side.

Headdress3541/1

Dari (or dhari) feather headdress. Headpiece is shaped like an inverted-U, with a horizontal line through the middle. Three lines extend from the top of the centre line, connecting with the top edge; outer lines are curved, middle line is straight. All pieces are made of cane, wrapped in orange fibre. Headpiece has an outer border of plastic; connected to headpiece with black cane, shaped into a zigzag. White feathers protrude from outer edges of plastic, secured with black fibre; feathers in bottom corners are longer than rest and undecorated. Rest of white feathers have had their ends cut; each has three small triangles on either side and long diagonal lines at the tip. Large red seed is tied to the top centre of the headpiece and has three feathers extending from it. Long grey feather in the middle, framed by smaller white and black ones, is topped with a tuft of white feathers; secured to grey feather with white fibre.

Basketry3575/1

Basketry covered clay jar with designs throughout a central band. Designs include steamship, deer, flowers, cannery, and boat; done in red, brown, green, and yellow. Above and below the band are open weave sections, trimmed with red; thin red stripe around foot of jar with purple triangles extending from either side. Two bands wrap around shoulder; top is red and green and bottom is plain yellow. Third open weave section divides shoulder and neck of jar; plain piece of cedar wraps around neck, trimmed with red. Red inverted triangles decorate opening of basketry; base of basketry consists of alternating bands of weave and open weave. Centre of base is woven and decorated with a plain green line. Glazed clay jar is dark brown.

Basket3567/1 a-b

Small woven grass basket with lid. Round basket with upper edge with one strip of cedar bark, that fits tightly under the dome-shaped lid. The imagery on the basket is of four green birds flying in the same direction around the middle, with a black and red stripe near the base. The lid has a faded black peak, with one black swirl and one red swirl below; the bottom edge of the lid has a green and red stripe around it. The colours inside are very bright, showing a dark blue-green and dark red-pink on the lid.

Basketry3552/3

Glass bottle covered with basketry. The basketry pattern has six bands of different types of weaving. The base is plain cedar bark; the bottom outer band is woven grass with red borders and a canoe image on both sides; next is a looser band of cedar weaving with a diagonal pattern (partly transparent), then a wider central grass band with an image similar to the BC Coat of Arms in the centre (shield-like shape between an elk and bighorn sheep, standing at sides) on one side, also with red borders. The other side appears to be a wolf headdress; then another loose cedar bark band; then another grass band with a canoe design on both sides, red borders, and two ducks on the short sides. There are 7 curved lines going up each shoulder; with the basketry ending midwayup the neck of the bottle (clear glass above). The bottle itself is somewhat oval, with flattened faces and rounded sides; the shoulders angle in sharply to a narrow neck (no lid).

Food Basket3559/4 a-e

Food carrying basket with three stacking sections (parts a-c) with a long rounded handle (part e) that loops down and up again along both sides, forming a carrying handle at top. The round containers are stacked together with a lid on the top one (part d); all three have side loops that slide over the upward bent halves of the handle, which helps hold them in place. Additional rings looped on either of handle. Twisted loop on top centre of lid, for handling. Large squat "X" designs on front and back sides of all containers. Entire basket is coloured red.
