This Song is a Museum2932/1

Octagonal drum with hide stretched over a wooden frame and secured with sinew. The sinew is threaded through the edges of the hide at the back and pulled to the centre. There is an abstract, black, paint splash pattern at the centre of the drum surrounded by many small spots of black. A black elastic string is tied to two of the sinew lines at the back.

Round drum with elk hide stretched over a wooden frame, pulled over the sides and secured at the back with fifteen hide ties. There are black and gray ink splash patterns on the face of the drum. There is a large translucent section near the edge. The ties are gathered in a Y shape at the centre of the back. A black string is tied to two of the hide strips on the back, for hanging.

Circular drum with hide stretched over a wooden frame and secured at the back with thin hide ties which are gathered in a cross pattern at the centre. There is a large, black, triangular-like splash pattern on the top of the drum, with many spatter marks. There is a black rectangular stamp on the outside of the wooden frame. A black string is tied to two of the hide strips on the back, for hanging.

Horn Spoon1992.197.2

This is carved out of one piece of elk horn. Horn spoon with a zig zag cut out handled. Designed by artist to refect traditional influence from spoon 05.588.7578 George Blake(Hupa, 1944-) was born on the Hupa Reservation. He works in contemporary styles of ceramics, and painting but concentrates more on tradtional styles of items such as redwood canoes, sinew-backed bows and arrow sets, elk horn purses and spoons and ceremonial featherwork.

This elk horn spoon is a beautiful contemporary vesion of historical spoons.George Blake(Hupa, 1944-) was born of the Hoopa Reservation. He works in contemporary styles of ceramics, and painting but concentrates more on tradtional styles of items such as redwood canoes, sinew-backed bows and arrow sets, elk horn purses and spoons and ceremonial featherwork.

Painted Elk Hide Robe64.13

This is a painted elk hide. The narrative includes a camp scene with tipis, a "sun" dance, modified to show an eagle rising above the pole structure, which has an unraised buffalo head. Warriors dressed in finery are entering the village. On the fringe a group of women sit near a fire. The perimeter depicts a buffalo hunt with the hunters on horseback using rifles. Vignettes of skinning the buffaloes are also depicted with heaps of the heads, hides and hooves separated and piled. The colors used are brown, black, red, pink, purple, blue, maroons, and green. Woman's Dress43.156.1

Woman's elk skin, short-sleeved dress with beadwork decoration at neckline. Beaded geometric figures in red, white, pink; green, blue and yellow on a pale blue background run in a narrow strip across the front and back of dress. Very simple effect. The sides and bottom of the dress are fringed.
