Bow3552/1 a-c

Small flatbow (part a) and two arrows (parts b-c). Bow is rectangular in shape and has hexagon-shaped string nocks protruding from either end. Bow gently narrows at centre, for grip. Artist inscription written along lower section of bow, on belly. Arrows consist of points inserted into shafts; all parts are made of wood. The points are secured with fibre cord; painted dark red. Nocks are carved into shafts and whipped with fibre cord. Two helical fletch also secured to each shaft with cord, at top and bottom. Cresting along shaft; alternating stripes of red-orange and dark green. Points have thin triangular tips. The longer arrow (part b) has a protruding triangle decoration underneath the point, before flaring into the tang. The other arrow (part c) has no additional decoration. Triangle decoration is painted red-orange, tang painted dark green; other arrow (part c) only has a band of red-orange across the tang.

Puffin Mask3584/1 a-o

Puffin head mask (part a) with multiple attachments (parts b-o). Puffin has a fish clamped in its multi-coloured beak, and four wide holes drilled around the back edge of its head. Eyes are triangular, with long lines extending from their bottom edges to back edge of mask. Circular area around eyes is undecorated; top, bottom and back of head are painted black. Two wood sticks tied in circles (parts b-c) attach to mask with short pegs (parts l-o); cormorant feathers, with wood carvings on tips, extend from outer circle (parts d-k). Carvings on feather ornaments consist of a thin bird head (part d), two fish (parts e-f), two fins (parts g-h), and three wings (parts i-k). Circular rings are painted orange-red; larger one has holes drilled through it for attachments to fit into. All wood attachments have black, dark red-orange, and light blue highlights painted across them; decorative incisions and elements carved in relief throughout. All cormorant feathers are dark grey-black. Metal ring attached to back of mask component, for hanging.

Headdress3536/4

Cassowary feather headdress consisting of a curved, braided band with twisted ties on either end. Multiple feathers are bound tightly to pieces of reed(?) and the bundles are woven into two layers along the band. Feathers at front are red-brown and black; back feathers are a mix of white and light brown. Additional layer of bound reeds woven along back of band.

Mask3532/3

Wood mask depicting a bird woman. Face is heart-shaped with prominent brow and cheeks; sharp nose bridge divides face. Eyes protrude outward at an angle and are made of three tiers. Top of nose bridge is coloured with orange pigment; bottom half is covered in dark clay with small inset cowrie shells along the edges. Larger cowrie shells decorate centre of bridge. Below clay, crooked beak extends downward, covering chin. Same clay and cowrie shell design along bottom edges of mask; top edge is coloured with orange pigment. Mask is surrounded by an oval-shaped frame, wrapped in plant fibre; frame and mask are attached with rounded triangles, made of identical material. Woven into the frame are curved feathers; feathers are a mix of black and shades of brown. Mask back is flat.

Basket3534/3

Woven rectangular basket with a telescoping lid; lid secured with twisted ties that loop over basket, functioning as a strap. Basket is naturally coloured and undecorated. Basket base is formed with a coiled rod, wrapped in plant fibre. Lid covers entirety of basket and is decorated with dark brown designs. Patterns on front and back consist of: plain line, repeating hourglass-like shapes, geometric and meander patterns with "X"'s throughout, and two plain lines. Patterns on sides are connected lines framed with the same repeating hourglass-like shapes and two plains lines on the front and back sides. Top of lid has a thin rectangular band in the centre with repeating hourglass-like shapes; plain lines surround the band. Top of lid is formed with a coiled rod, wrapped in plant fibre; additional rod runs through centre, attaching front and back. Base of lid formed with stiff coils, attached with additional stiff coils, dyed dark brown. Groupings of feather decorations attached to each corner on top of lid, two more groupings on front and back bottom edge; feathers are a mix of red, grey, yellow, blue and green.

Rattle with a ball-shaped head and wooden handle. Ball is made of seed(?) beads and is decorated with alternating stripes; done in brown and dark brown. Cylindrical protrusion on top of head with an opening, showing hollow interior. A band of red feathers is tied around the midpoint of the handle; additional plant ties at base.

Apron3534/2

Small beaded apron with feather fringe along sides. Beads are made of seeds threaded onto a woven cream-coloured, cotton frame; cotton creates fringe along the bottom edge. Apron is light brown with dark brown meander patterns along the top and bottom edges. Feather fringe is a mix of black, red and yellow. Small ties along the top edge, on either side.

Comb3534/6

Comb consisting of two horizontal bars and grass(?) fibre teeth. The fibres are inserted into the top bar, made of bone, and separated from one another with cream-coloured cotton strands; strands are woven into a repeating concentric diamond pattern. Bottom of the weaving is anchored to the second bar, made of wood, which is wrapped in cotton. Teeth extend past the lower bar and are undecorated. Stiff braided ties secure bars together, on either end of weaving; ties wrapped in cotton. Red and yellow feathers inserted into either end of bone bar.

Mask3522/39 a-p

Wooden humanoid mask (part a) with detachable canine style teeth (parts b-p). Face has a semi-circular brow overtop protruding circular eyes and a large nose. The eye rims are covered in white pigment; red pigment across interior of mouth. Teeth extending from upper lip (parts b-i) are mostly covered in red pigment; teeth extending from lower lip (parts j-p) are mostly undecorated. Several teeth are actual animal teeth, rest are wood. Grey-brown and black fur line all edges of mouth, imitating a moustache and beard. Braided cords nailed around the chin, imitating a beard. Bristles of plant fibre, fur and feathers are attached to the forehead ridge, imitating hair. There is an oval-shaped opening above the nose bridge; mask has holes for eyes and mouth. All sides are rounded; interior is hollow. Holes are drilled along all edges, for attachments. Looped cords on either side of mask.

Hat3509/1

Wide brimmed, dome-shaped hat woven from palm leaves. Hat frame formed with an inner rod. Four groupings of red and blue tassels, tied together with braided cords, secured at intervals along the bottom edge. Star-shaped medallion with fringe on top centre of hat. Design consists of concentric circles and stars; done in red, yellow, dark blue, white and light green beads. Long feather attached to middle of medallion with red cord. Extending outward from the star, to the edges, are black, dark yellow and red beaded lines; dividing the hat into triangle-shaped sections. Matching line borders upper section of hat, before it slopes towards the brim. Band of red and dark yellow diamonds above border, connected to one another with black dots. Green painted decorations across interior of hat, matching beaded line pattern on surface. Hat band attached to interior, woven from rattan(?) strips and lined with patterned cloth. Red tassels on either side of band.
